Demons bound by my aether sorceries are now 15% less likely to help unauthorized users in figuring out how to bind more powerful demons, but do appear to be slightly more likely to assist in overthrowing the king if asked (although they don’t like doing so)

Now we think about changing laws and structures so that another Donald Trump cannot come to power. Some changes may be needed, but insisting that our leaders be decent people is the basic need. That includes the Republicans in Congress who have attached themselves to him.

@recdiffs.bsky.social Thing it took me too long to realize: “Checker” in “Checker cab” refers to a specific design of car made by the Checker Motors Corporation. (I had always assumed there was a big taxi corporation called Checker) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Checker...

And the color grading too -- fairly de-saturated. Reminds me of older color film. Maybe that reads as more authentic nowadays?

Today, apparently, is National Potato Day in America, so if you’d like an absurdly long thread of root-vegetable-native-to-the-Americas content, you’ve come to the right place. We begin with the potato monument in Biesiekierz, Poland, because, well: look at it. Of course we do
A large sculpture in a park, possibly, or at least an area of grass by a road, in Poland. An enormous pale blue stand, with four prongs, holds up a gigantic (metal?) potato, complete with knobbles

Happy International Owl Awareness Day! Please enjoy this photograph of ornithologist Herbert Brown (r) with an elf owl, the world’s smallest owl
It’s a monochrome photograph. Brown is a moustachioed gentleman wearing a brimmed hat, neckerchief and braces. The owl is perched on his upheld hand. It’s about the size of a sparrow.

The silly and heartfelt politics of mountain heights. Also, Leadville CO rejecting renaming a mountain after Winston Churchill (ty, Leadville)
MOUNT MASSIVE 14,421ft/4,396m
First ascent, 1874, H. Gannett.
Colorado, USA
The bulky, sprawling appearance of this huge peak in the Sawatch Range inspired early prospectors and miners to give the mountain its current name. The peak is the second highest in Colorado, only twelve feet lower than its neighbor, Mount Elbert (14,433ft/4,399m). Successive measurements of Colorado's peaks have altered Mount Massive's status among the state's "Fourteeners," each time provoking outcries among partisans of different mountains. Mount Massive had been thought to be Colorado's highest peak, and when a survey showed Mount Elbert to be slightly higher, supporters of Mount Massive threatened to build a cairn on its top that would make it number one again. (When a survey showed Mount Massive higher than Mount Rainier in the state of Washington, the Tacoma Chamber of Commerce threatened to build up their mountain.)
Attempts to change Mount Massive's name have been no more successful than the attempts to change its elevation. The name Mount Gannett was proposed in 1922 to honor the surveyor Henry Gannett (see Gannett Peak), who made the first ascent of Mount Massive, but local opposition prevailed. Similarly, an unsuccessful proposal in 1965 to rename the mountain for Sir Winston Churchill, who had died that year, provoked outrage among the people of nearby Leadville.
