1. BAND ON THE RUN - a nearly perfect album that Macca could’ve done 100% by himself, but he graciously let his wife and buddy tag along. Every song is at least a 7/10 (minus “No Words,” which is a 6/10), with four 9/10s or higher. Plus, Christopher Lee is on the cover

2. RED ROSE SPEEDWAY - if you listen to the original 2 disc version, there’s no doubt this belongs here. The single disc one is a little less convincing, especially with “My Love” schlocking things up. But “Loup” is a better “Wild Honey Pie” and Denny Seiwell is the best non-Ringo Macca drummer.

3. VENUS AND MARS - the victory lap after BAND ON THE RUN, this is the sound of a band knowing they can (temporarily) do no wrong, and all the good and bad that comes with it. Some strong songs, some chaff, but the signs of what will follow are already peaking through.

4. BACK TO THE EGG - This is a controversial placement, but the songs are strong. I could see how in ‘79 this would seem like Macca trying to go punk, but removed from that context it just means there are 4-5 uptempo numbers which, from SPEED and LONDON are wonderful course corrections.

5. WINGS AT THE SPEED OF SOUND - Macca pretending the band is a democracy by giving every member a song to sing. There are some nice songs here, but this is the sound of settling into easy listening.

6. WILD LIFE - the most undercooked, lazy, purposely slight album of Macca’s career. That said, there are a few gems, and it sounds like a real band, unlike LONDON TOWN which sounds like Lite FM got sucked into a Casio demo
