Washington Metro @wmata.com board this morning unanimously approved the agency's $913 million plan to automate the Red Line, which will also include platform screen doors at 20 of 27 stations. Automation could come online by 2032 at the earliest. The plan needs federal funding support.

Farewell, DC Streetcar. You deserved so much more than what you got - extensions east to Benning Road and west to Georgetown, as well as dedicated lanes that would have provided great benefits to the District.

Americans are being conditioned to think of crime as an urban issue. Ask why. Alabama's murder rate is far higher than New York City's. Urban crime is not worse than rural crime. It's just more visible. In cities everything is more visible. So be careful what you blame city leaders for.

Californians continue to strongly support high speed rail. The decades-long propaganda campaign against it simply hasn’t worked. People know it’s absurd that California doesn’t have a true statewide rail system. That’s going to change. We’re working to make it much easier & faster to get it done.

Normally I reassure myself that something like this is just a presidential request, not an actual budget, but the end of the article has a chilling possibility (in screenshot) for it becoming reality by circumventing Congress. arstechnica.com/space/2025/0...
One concern, however, is that should the budgeting process be delayed—as is often the case with the federal budget—the White House could force agencies to make operational plans based on the president's budget request once the new fiscal year begins on October 1. Again this will depend on negotiations with Congress, but, using a process called impoundment, some Trump officials believe it may be possible to turn the budget request into an actual budget for all intents and purposes.

There's a lot of good stuff in here. There are certainly still improvements to be had, and ideally the parkway would be replaced with just a two-lane local (not commuter) road, but plans for widening the trail, ending the bizarre reversible lanes, and putting in more roundabouts are all fantastic.

Secretary Duffy now has a whole extra month to read Streetsblog's coverage of how congestion pricing is benefiting New Yorkers -- and working better than predicted. 🧵
Tweet from USDOT Sec. Sean Duffy:

".
@GovKathyHochul
 — the federal government and
@POTUS
 are putting New York on notice.

Your refusal to end cordon pricing and your open disrespect towards the federal government is unacceptable.

Just as your high tolls and no free road option are a slap in the face to hard working Americans, your refusal to approve two vital pipelines that will lower fuel costs by 50% are against the public’s best interests.

Your unlawful pricing scheme charges working-class citizens to use roads their federal tax dollars already paid to build.

We will provide New York with a 30-day extension as discussions continue.

Know that the billions of dollars the federal government sends to New York are not a blank check. Continued noncompliance will not be taken lightly."
