We have received a second confirmation (writer Mark Askwith) that artist and Marvel Comics legend Sal Buscema has passed away. He passed last Friday at the age of 89 -- today is his birthday, we would have been 90. Our condolences to his family, friends and legion of fans throughout the decades.

Cover to softcover book 'Sal Buscema: Comics Fast & Furious Artist"

In 1968, Sal Buscema joined the ranks of Marvel Comics and quickly became one of their most recognizable and dependable artists. Following in the footsteps of his big brother John Buscema, Sal quickly came into his own, and penciled some of Marvel’s most memorable storylines, such as the original Avengers/Defenders war, as well as “The Secret Empire Saga” and the Nomad arc in the pages of Captain America. He also had a ten-year run on the Hulk and drew 100 consecutive issues of Spectacular Spider-Man, making him one of the few definitive artists of the Bronze Age. Sal Buscema: Comics’ Fast & Furious Artist, by Alter Ego’s Jim Amash with Modern Masters’ Eric Nolen-Weathington, explores the life and career of this true legend of the comics industry, through an exhaustive interview with the artist, complete with extensive examples of his art, including a deluxe color section, and a gallery of work from Sal’s personal files. Fans love the fast and furious style of Sal Buscema, and this first-ever career-spanning book is guaranteed to please!

Steve Rude Facebook post:

Friends,

Another birthday. Another year around the sun. Sitting here in my studio, looking at 45 years worth of Nexus pages, and honestly? I'm overwhelmed.

Not gonna sugarcoat it - this year's been rough. Jaynelle's been through hell with her surgeries, and I've had my own scares. There were nights I couldn't sleep, wondering if everything we built would just... disappear.

The lights actually got shut off this month. THE LIGHTS. In my studio. Where I've drawn your commissions, created your favorite characters, taught everything I know about this craft. Jaynelle's been working herself to death trying to keep us afloat. 100-hour weeks. It's killing me to watch.

But you know what keeps me going? Saturdays at 1:30. Seeing your names pop up in the livestream chat. The kid who messages me about learning to draw like the "old masters." The collector who's been with me since Capital Comics. You.

45 years of Nexus. Man, we were all so young when this started, weren't we? Now look at us. Still here. Still believing that hand-drawn art matters. That stories about hope and heroism aren't outdated.

I need to ask for your help. Not easy for me - you know that. But we've got 30 days to make this work or we lose everything. The house, the studio, those Saturday streams where we just talk art and life.

If I've ever drawn something that mattered to you, if Nexus ever meant something, if you believe traditional comic art should survive - please. Share our launch. Join the Patreon. Grab something during today's sale (www.steverude.com). Tell your comic shop about us.

This is still our adventure. But I need my co-pilots now more than ever.

Still the Dude,

P.S. - Jaynelle says thank you. You guys are keeping her going too.

The John Buscema-pencilled poster that came free with cut-out tokens from the first 10 issues of 1972's The Mighty World Of Marvel. I had this on my wall for a few years. To my childhood self, it seemed to be little short of ten feet tall & as bright & clear as Technicolour.
