Happy Election Day! Early in-person voting is done, and the numbers from the SOS this morning should be nearly final (some counties are stragglers on reporting). We had 162k, which is well above Aug 24 (63k), but below the historically high Aug 22 (215k). ike-lab.com/dailyev_2608... #ksleg

It's a bummer. My logs say @ike-lab.com has gotten more than 100,000 unique visits this month. Our big election spike in 2024 was just under 5,000. The August primary is not getting 20x the attention. Also, there are a lot of 404s looking for WordPress files and directories, which IKE doesn't use.

There are big primaries for both parties, including for an open governor's seat. Maybe even bigger is a constitutional amendment to move the state supreme court from a merit/retention system to nonpartisan elections - Republicans are looking to push the court more conservative with the change.

Supreme Court Decides Against
Republican Candidate.
The supreme
court today decided
against U. B. Sharpless in his contest for member of the legislature. Sharpless is a Republican, and the action of the supreme court will give the certificate of election to Peter McLaughlin,
the Democratic
nominee.
Sharpless brought an action in the supreme court asking for a writ of mandamus to compel the county commissioners of Atehison county to recanvass the vote and throw out the vote of the railroad men who voted away from home.
The supreme court declines to issue the writ.
Justice Greene gave the decision in the case from the bench when the supreme court convened for its December sitting this morning. In giving the decision he

Diana Forster, Dan Smith, and I have a paper that looked at invalid petition signatures for a city initiative, and the heat map glows in neighborhoods just outside the city boundary. Lots of people aren't aware!

Arguing technicalities in a special election before the Australian ballot was adopted

In nearly all the tickets voted last Tuesday, the words "to fill vacancy," was omitted before the name of the person voted for, for Senator. W. H. Morris received a few votes for that office, with those words inserted. Some claim that this will give Morris the office, but it is hardly probable that in a contest, a technical point would be allowed to weigh against the will of the people as expressed in the election.

Random chart: when someone updates their party registration, how often are they *only* changing their party registration (versus, they do it along with an address update)? You can see spikes for the presidential and Aug primaries in 2024, and nothing for the non-partisan primary in Aug 2025.

Chart: x-axis is month from Dec-23 to May-26, y-axis is percentage, lines for Dems, Reps, and Unaffiliated. Spikes for Dems and Reps around spring and fall 2024, steady 20%-30% otherwise

Being poking around No Labels registrants in KS - they started a couple months after we launched IKE Lab and just finished, so we've got great data on their whole run. Mapped out all the party registration changes people had in that span, and some do it a lot. Two people had 8 changes in 2.5 years.

List of individuals and their party registration changes since December 2023. The highlighted cell has eight changes in that time.

No Labels Kansas is weird - it’s an officially recognized political party of the state, but the bylaws they submitted when they registered said they’re only allowed to nominate candidates for president and vice president. People keep trying to run for lower office under them but the SOS rejects it.

Authorized Activities. NLKS is authorized by No Labels to conduct the following activities in Kansas: (i) select delegates to participate in the national nominating convention of No Labels; (ii) obtain ballot access for candidates nominated by No Labels for the federal offices of President and Vice President; (iii) designate eligible individuals for Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elector; (iv) conduct campaigns for candidates nominated by No Labels for the federal offices of President and Vice President; (v) raise and expend funds, as necessary, to carry out authorized activities; and (vil) perform other tasks necessary or legally required to carry out authorized activities. NLKS is not authorized and shall not nominate, support, or oppose any candidate for a state, county, municipal, school, or district office or position.
