After much discussion and deliberation, SURJ Boston has chosen to disaffiliate from SURJ National and organize independently as Collective Action Against White Supremacy (CAAWS).

Your Saturday read is about the struggle to put words on the page, and the temptation to use LLMs. “Eventually your LLM will write your child a note and their LLM will write a reply and neither of you will actually know what is in each others’ hearts.” buttondown.com/monteiro/arc...

Something has really bothered me about the Gloria Steinem discourse—something that's not really about Gloria Steinem. So, I wrote about it.

This perfectly describes some of my favorite memories of bombing home from work at night with headphones on with a couple of friends on our pieced together fixed gear conversions. Unfortunately I am now old enough to fear death.

I will keep repeating this until the day I die because I have no other way of processing the anger and trauma. Obama opened Dilley. Obama ramped up family detention at Berks and, also, Karnes. Children under his watch were suicidal. At Berks, the mothers called a certain meal "monkey meat." ...

Interview is at rlemay.com.au/greg-egan-th.... I just finished Quarantine for the first time, so I’m doing my usual “read random things about Greg Egan on the internet” thing that I do after finishing one of his books. And you can buy The Old Iron Dream here: www.inkshares.com/books/the-ol...

The Old Iron Dream
an article inspired by the need for a no-bullshit, critical look at the history of science fiction’s far-right and its long-lasting influence. The Old Iron Dream is a non-fiction book by David Forbes...

There’s such a history of fascists and reactionaries in sci-fi (thanks to The Old Iron Dream by @davidforbes.bsky.social for distilling this for me many years ago), especially “hard” sci-fi, so it’s a pleasant surprise to happen across further confirmation that Greg Egan is decidedly not.
Screenshot of a 2009 interview with author Greg Egan. Text follows:

There was a fairly large gap between your 2002 book Schild's Ladder and 2008's Incandescence.
Why so large a gap between books?
In 2002, I got involved with the refugee support movement, trying to help some of the asylum seekers who were in long-term detention in Australia. It really was a disgraceful situation; many people were locked up for three or four years, and some for as long as seven. That ended up monopolising my attention for about four years, so l didn't get much writing done.

I don’t know if this is really an eating habit but I used to toast two pieces of white bread, put a couple slices of American cheese between them, and then microwave it for like 15 seconds to melt the cheese and make a “grilled cheese.”

This is kind of how I used to eat slices of pizza. Gotta save the most deliciously cheesy bite for last.

I’d fuck with this. Gonna try it next time I have mozzarella sticks or jalapeño poppers. Thanks for the idea 🫡. Reminded me that I used to eat all the crust except for the frosted side off of Pop-Tarts, before having just a square of the frosted side left.

I love this point because it’s one of the things that’s always bothered me about so much “patriarchy hurts men too” discourse—the emphasis always seems to be on things like “men can’t cry” rather than the people who are feminized relative to compulsory manhood and thus the most victimized.

Huh, just looked it up. No arms. From www.thefa.com/football-rul....
1. Offside position
It is not an offence to be in an offside position.

A player is in an offside position if:
any part of the head, body or feet is in the opponents’ half (excluding the halfway line) and
any part of the head, body or feet is nearer to the opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent
The hands and arms of all players, including the goalkeepers, are not considered. For the purposes of determining offside, the upper boundary of the arm is in line with the bottom of the armpit.

Felt like I was missing something there too. Do a defender’s arms not count toward where the line/plane is?

I’d switch to Linux but I think I’m going to die of natural causes before anyone other than Apple can make a decent touchpad. I’m a fan of keyboard nav where possible (I use neovim exclusively to code!) but certain stuff really benefits from a mouse interface.

Giving Game Empire vibes.
Rear cover from Game Empire CD-ROM. Blue and black gradient background with gold Game Empire logo in the top left, a list of a lot of games of varying quality, and screenshots of Galactic Battle, Jigsaw Puzzle (lol) and a card game (looks like solitaire). Also has a list of system requirements, and an explanatory paragraph titled “What is shareware?”

System Requirements:
386DX/25 PC or better; 640K base memory; AMB RAM; hard disk; VGA with 256 colors; CD-ROM drive; Microsoft-compatible mouse; DOS 5.0 or better; sound card.
WHAT IS SHAREWARE?
Shareware is an exciting marketing method which allows you to try top-quality software before you pay the author. With Shareware, you cannot be disappointed spending money for a program that's not right for you. The small fee you pay to us covers only the duplication and distribution costs, and permits you to evaluate the program. If you continue to use the program, you must send the author an additional payment which may entitle you to technical support, printed manual, bonus programs and more. Your payment supports authors, enabling them to continue writing newer and better Shareware programs.

I want to say one thing about this. This has been the hiring process for low wage workers for awhile. Wal Mart et al have been using automated job application systems to gamify everything from postings to schedules. The crisis, such that it is, is that it is now happening in middle skills jobs.

The lament over a lack of “viewpoint diversity” is not a manifestation of a sincere concern over academic freedom, but part of a political project that aims at breaking what the Right calls “the cathedral” in order to establish reactionary hegemony across society.

Like a lot of small businesses in our region, Firestorm has been in financial distress for the last year. Hurricane Helene was our tipping point, but local cost of living increases, inflation, and higher occupancy costs are huge contributors. 1/9
A collective photo taken at Firestorm Books. Our team, including five humans and two dogs, is sitting on the sidewalk in front of the building looking relaxed. The sky is bright but cloudy and flags on the building hang without any indication of wind. The building is painted forest green and various posters and signs are visible in the windows, which reflect the sky. The largest reads "Immigrants Welcome."
