Newspaper clipping, Stars and Stripes, Sept 13 1980.

Headline: "'Disco Train' planned to Munich Oktoberfest"

Text: "The Theta Rho Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity will sponsor a Sept 27 "Disco Train" ride from Heidelberg to the Oktoberfest in Munich as a fund-raising event for its scholarship fund.

This year, $4000 worth of scholarships were awarded to eight seniors at American high schools in USAREUR. Each student received a check for $500 from the non-profit, private association sanctioned by USAREUR."

More from my Oktoberfest obsession: 1973 article claiming that roughly *half* of Oktoberfest goers that year were from the U.S. (?!?!), and also describing Oktoberfest beer as "golden" by default 🤔🤔🤔 Sharing the second photo mainly for "Demonstration in Litership."

Price kept rising, and then Oktoberfest patrons started complaining about too much foam. So in 1972, there were "squads" of "taproom police" watching pours to make sure they met the 1-liter fill line. Could use those in the US, frankly.
Clipped article from Stars and Stripes, Sep 25, 1972

Title: "Oktoberfest is Underway."

Tezt: "The world's biggest beer festival, the Oktoberfest, opened Saturday in Munich where the Summer Olympics ended 13 days earlier.

Lord Mayor Georg Konawitter tapped the first keg at noon to open the 16-day celebration commemoriating the 1810 marriage of King [sic] Ludwig I of Bavaria.

Specially brewed festival beer is served in earthenware mugs at a record of 3.05 marks, or about $1 a quart. Because of complaints last year that portions had too much foam. special squads of "taproom police" are checking servers to ensure that mugs are filled to the liter line."

Update: the price hike caused enough uproar that the price was then lowered to 2.65 marks. Munich doesn't mess around when it comes to beer prices.
News clipping, Stars and Stripes, Sept 20, 1970.

Article title: 'The First Keg is Tapped'

Discusses opening of that year's Oktoberfest in Munich. Relevant section: "Preparations for this year's festival bubbled into a "beer war" and public threats of boycott when tent managers announced that they were raising the price of a quart from 2.40 marks (65 cents) to 2.75 marks.

The controversy ended when managers, under pressure from state and city authorities, agreed to set the price at 2.65 marks."

'Even Beer is Getting High at Oktoberfest' Complaint in 1970 that inflation had brought the beer price at Munich's Oktoberfest to 2.75 Deutsche Marks, equivalent to 74 cents per Maß. Adjusted for inflation, that's about $6.90 today. Beer at Oktoberfest this year will start at €14.80 (~ $17 USD)
News clipping from Stars and Stripes, Aug 21, 1970.

Title: 'Even Beer is Getting High at Oktoberfest' (perfect headline, no notes)

Text: "If President Nixon's advisors were here, they might feel compelled to issue an "inflation alert."

The staple of Oktoberfest -- a one-liter mug of high powered Bavarian beer -- has fallen prey to spiraling prices.

When the festival opens here Sept 19, the going price for a mug in one of the big tents will be 2.75 marks (approximately 74 cents), up from 2.40 marks last year.

An Oktoberfest spokesman said the increase was unavoidable because of a 27 per cent wage and benefit hike recently given to brewery employees and the high cost of providing oompah bands for the tents."

Credit where it's due: Stars & Stripes understood German beer strength much better in 1968 (and was talking up Rauchbier!)
Text clip from June 1968 issue of Stars & Stripes magazine. Reads: "To settle age-old arguments over the alcohol content of beer, one should remember that in Germany "percentage" has nothing to do with alcohol but refers to the Sammwuerze, the extracts which determine flavor and punch.

The alcohol content roughly amounts to one third to 1/4 of the Stammwuerze. Thus an extra powerful 16-percent bock has an alcohol content of 4 to 6 per cent -- and that's about the top for any beer."

Goes on to say "...Scotch fans probably would enjoy Bamberg's Raunbeer [sic], which has a faint whiskey flavor because the malt has been smoked."

Reading U.S. military coverage of Munich's Oktoberfest in the 1950s, and they keep describing the festival beer as super strong, usually 18% (!). My only guess is that they confused ABV with Original Gravity (German brewers often use a percentage scale that I struggle to understand/convert)
Clipped screenshow of magazine text from a 1954 issue of Stars and Stripes. The relevant text is circled in red and reads: "The main aim of the Oktoberfest, to put it bluntly, is the drinking of the strong 18-per cent "wiesnbier," which is sold at the fest only in liter measures."

This and the vintage MLB cans are neat and all, but I'm surprised by how sleepy Anheuser Busch's celebration of its 150th has been. AB has both a unique position in American beer and the most impressive archives of any US beer brand. They could be telling spectacular stories and they just...aren't.
PR image of Budweiser Beechwood Reserve beer label. Label is red and reminiscent of classic Bud label, but has MLB logos and Budweiser's 150 insignia. Relevant tagline for this special edition is "Brewed with 150 years of baseball history and aged with Beechwood Baseball Bats"

I hope they dusted the bats off before brewing with them.
