Real lack of strategic vision in FFFG #Budget2027: short-term giveaways dominate with little structural investment that would lower child care costs, address housing costs or sustainable reduction in energy costs.

Wild idea: what if the Commission listened to civil society and independent scientists instead of the usual corporate suspects? 🙃 While industry lobbies tighten their grip, progress on climate, pollution and digital rights is being chipped away. That's not competitiveness. That's capture.
Quote graphic by Corporate Europe Observatory. A black-and-white photo of Kenneth Haar, researcher and campaigner, appears on the right. The quote reads: 'Clearly, Ursula von der Leyen takes great pride in the deregulation campaign she has launched under the pretext of simplification. Her problem is, that the EU cannot address the climate crisis or handle the risks from AI if it keeps going the way of omnibuses and deregulation. The plan to do a pact against gold-plating is much more dangerous than it sounds. Corporate lobby groups will eye this as an opportunity to bring down ambitious environmental policies and social standards at the member state level. This could evolve into a deregulation drive going berserk.'

I regard the surrender of the 1916 rising, as noble as the rising itself as it was an assessment in an undemocratic & blood sacrifing age, that further violence was not worth it albeit it meant death for the leaders.

New publication: Elke Weik and I discuss the ongoing deinstitutionalisation of and loss of faith in the modern university, which manifests itself in certain practices adopted to veil, take advantage of, or cope with this loss. [open access] #HigherEd doi.org/10.3167/lati...
Organising for the end: Deinstitutionalising practices in universities

Elke Weik and Ronald Hartz

Abstract

We theorise and illustrate the deinstitutionalisation process that
universities are currently undergoing. This deinstitutionalisation
process is triggered by a loss of moral values that have formed the
basis of a certain self-description and self-identity of the university
as an institution for more than a century. It manifests itself in certain
funerary practices that are adopted to veil, take advantage of, or cope
with this loss. We look in particular at three funerary practices. First,
we highlight the increasing investments in branding and marketing
activities and their impact on the image of universities. Furthermore,
we explore shifts in governance and the authoritarian turn in uni-
versity leadership. Third, we will take a closer look at expressions of
dissatisfaction and dissent among its members. In the remainder, we
will reflect on the future(s) of universities at this critical juncture.

Keywords

deinstitutionalisation, funerary practices, higher education,
organisation, universities, values.
