To give blood. I remember being angry I couldn't lie about my age to give blood. But I also remembering doing antiwar chalkings outside my high school pretty immediately. There was near total emotional consensus in a way that is hard to capture now, but immediate divergence about the what next.

I was 15 in Burlington, Vermont, at the time, so I remember intense manifestations of this and also anti-war protests, skepticism and concern pretty immediately. I do think it is hard to articulate now how everyone felt scared, everyone saw it as a major event, and everyone of age was in a rush 1/2

Generally, as someone who graduated from high school in Burlington VT and now lives in a liberal SEC stronghold, an ongoing surprise for me has been that a lot of white Dem voters "cue" as conservative for me in their self-presentation.

I think for some people, football and greek life and big cars are The Culture rather than conservatively coded. The inverse parallel would be things like lattes, yoga, pad thai food being lib coded in the 1990s and ubiquitous now.

My anecdata is that the gender pol is real quite (a female student joke in 2024 was let's not remind the fraternities to vote this time) and a lot of young women who are performing/drawn to conservative aesthetic self-presentations are not voting that way.

I think the distinction is whether or not you have to work (assuming you are working age). UMC is 90th to 99th percent, 90th for those who had some family help, and closer to 97th for those who didn't (you need less income to be UMC if you don't have student loans, etc etc).

I think we saw this in the NY mayoral primary, and I see part of the pattern as driven by unwillingness by establishment dems to move a little left and support the compromise candidate.
