All these white papers and reports on Trust in Higher Ed™️ mean ✨JACK SHIT✨ if men are assigned essays after drugging gang r@ping a woman for SEVEN HOURS. What happened at Cornell is not some rare event and the ONLY reason we know abt it is because Jane Doe is suing and the student paper reported.

The American Statistical Association's six principles of proper use and interpretation of p-values (2016) From Robert Matthews' (2026) new article: doi.org/10.1093/jrss... #stats
The ASA Statement’s six principles of the proper
use and interpretation of p-values (2016)

1. p-values can indicate how incompatible the data are with a specified statistical model.

2. p-values do not measure the probability that the studied hypothesis is true, or the probability that the data were produced by random chance alone.

3. Scientific conclusions and business or policy decisions should not be based only on whether a p-value passes a specific threshold.

4. Proper inference requires full reporting and transparency.

5. A p-value, or statistical significance, does not measure the sizeof an effect or the importance of a result.

6. By itself, a p-value does not provide a good measure o fevidence regarding a model or hypothesis.

Today inside NIH I heard senior leaders endorse an idea that banning the term "social determinants of health" improves science by making us more precise. The same people who championed SDOH research just over a year ago are now toeing the party line. Taking a moment to unpack this. 🧵1/?

ICE agents eat at small-town Mexican restaurant — then arrest workers
Federal agents detained three workers from a family-owned Mexican restaurant in Willmar yesterday, hours after four agents ate lunch there.

It was not immediately clear what the immigration status of those detained was, or whether the people detained included the restaurant’s owners or only workers.

An eyewitness who declined to give a name for fear of retribution, told the Minnesota Star Tribune that four ICE agents sat in a booth for a meal at El Tapatio a little before 3 p.m. Staff at the restaurant were frightened, said the eyewitness, who shared pictures from the restaurant as well as video of the arrest.

The arrest happened around 8:30 p.m. near a Lutheran church and Willmar Middle School as agents followed the workers after they closed up for the night. A handful of bystanders blew whistles and shouted at agents as they detained the people. “Would your mama be proud of you right now?” one of the bystanders asked.

This is why Democrats simply cannot work with Republicans in Congress on appropriations or anything else in good faith. Trump will illegally seize money appropriated to Democratic states, refuse them disaster aid, threaten them with Fed invasion, threaten their governors, etc.

Perennial reminder of this excellent paper about how secret police forces are swamped with underachievers “We don’t want clever people. We want mediocrities.” (Ungated summary here ajps.org/2019/10/08/w...)
Why Underachievers Dominate Secret Police Organizations: Evidence from Autocratic
Argentina

Adam Scharpf
Christian Gläßel

Abstract: Autocrats depend on a capable secret police. Anecdotal evidence, however, often characterizes agents as surprisingly mediocre in skill and intellect. To explain this puzzle, this article focuses on the career incentives underachieving individuals face in the regular security apparatus. Low-performing officials in hierarchical organizations have little chance of being promoted or filling lucrative positions. To salvage their careers, these officials are willing to undertake burdensome secret police work. Using data on all 4,287 officers who served in autocratic Argentina (1975-83), we study biographic differences between secret police agents and the entire recruitment pool. We find that low-achieving officers were stuck within the regime hierarchy, threatened with discharge, and thus more likely to join the secret police for future benefits. The study demonstrates how state bureaucracies breed mundane career concerns that produce willing enforcers and cement violent regimes. This has implications for the understanding of autocratic consolidation and democratic breakdown.
