If cities think managing street parking is such a burden, why do all their road designs keep giving it away for free? They seem to be in control of both variables, land use requirements and adding street parking everywhere, and still complaining about the effects of their policies.

I think it's revealing that all these complaints boil down to people with wealth and political power wanting the ability to choose who gets to live near them, and everyone else has to live where they get the least opposition and thank the landed gentry for the privilege.

Why should people who can't afford a detached home be forced to live on busy, noisy, polluted streets? Why does the best land have to be reserved for only some? Why is council allowed to "blanket zone" for low density, but not allowed to "blanket zone" for medium density? What makes them different?

You're only listing negatives, as you see them. What about adding 8 new families to a neighbourhood? What about increasing tax revenue? What about having more neighbours for your kids to play with? Do you really see no positives and only negatives when things change?

I’ve talked to too many of my neighbours, regular people who have no reason to behave like a Premier, and I don’t have hope anymore on housing.

I think if push came to shove and Manitoba had the same growth that other provinces have, even he would find a way to frame denying homes to the next generation as “local democracy”. This selfishness around housing and municipal policy seems to be everywhere…

I think if you asked people “do you want more neighbours”, they will overwhelmingly say the ideal number is 0. If you go further and say those neighbours might be poorer or different from them in any way, the number slips into the negatives. I see open and accepted misanthropy on this topic…

It just hurts to know that previous generations had this discussion and they “allowed” space for me to live. The majority of voices in public meetings say this shouldn’t happen anymore. It doesn’t seem like minds are changing over time as the crisis keeps going. I might be too cynical, but it hurts.

When do younger people start to really show the political radicalism that older Canadians are deliberately forcing them to adopt with policies like this? Or will it just be more nihilism and apathy?

Trapped is a good term. I feel trapped between big developers who give envelopes to Ford and the majority of my fellow neighbours who openly want the future to just go away and live somewhere else. It’s genuinely disheartening. The housing crisis is complained about by many and yet enabled by more.

I did some “research” after seeing this next to the bike rack on my Walmart trip yesterday. They come with CarPlay and Android Auto now! They’re a genuine menace on the sidewalk or trail. The longer they exist, the more attitude I get on my normal e-bike while riding on my local paths and trails.

My local city government thinks it's a good investment to use AI to help developers and land owners see if their housing projects fit the arbitrary and insane limitations we place on every plot of land in the city - instead of just questioning and changing those limitations on housing.
