The real story is that progressives on the council pushed for fiscal oversight and against overspending. We got called out for it, but taxpayers didn't foot the bill and the trip is still happening. Honestly shocked to hear CMs who want to make big cuts to the budget advocate for overspending.

The City Council just passed this resolution asking the Hennepin County Sheriff and University of Minnesota to take down all of their flock cameras. Seems like a no-brainer issue that would be a unanimous vote right? Council Members Rainville, Vetaw, Shaffer, and Palmisano voted no.
Calling on Hennepin County and the University of Minnesota to terminate the use of Flock Safety cameras used as license plate reader cameras.
Whereas, the City of Minneapolis government does not own or operate Flock Safety cameras, but residents of the city have called on their elected leaders to take any and all actions to stop the proliferation of Flock Safety cameras and ban their usage; and
Whereas, the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) and the University of Minnesota have deployed Flock Safety automated license plate reader (ALPR) cameras throughout Hennepin County and the city of Minneapolis; and
Whereas, a Star Tribune investigation in July reported that federal immigration enforcement agencies, such as ICE, had the means to access Flock Safety data, despite Minnesota law mandating that ALPR data only be shared for criminal investigations; and
Whereas, Flock Safety ALPR technology captures and retains detailed data on the movements of every vehicle that passes each camera, regardless of whether the vehicle's occupants are suspected of any crime, creating a comprehensive surveillance record of residents' daily movements; and
Whereas, communities across Minnesota including Duluth, Isanti County, Sherburne County, West St.
Paul, Saint Paul, Columbia Heights, Brooklyn Park, and Shorewood -have ended or paused their use of Flock Safety technology in recent months, citing cost, erosion of public trust, and concerns over how the data is accessed and shared; and
Whereas, for months, residents throughout the city of Minneapolis have been organizing against Flock Safety in their neighborhoods, and some have been successful in their efforts to remove Flock Safety cameras from their local streets; and
Whereas, the City of Minneapolis government does not own or operate Flock Safety cameras, but residents of the city have called on their elected leaders to take any and all actions to stop the proliferation of Flock Safety cameras and ban their usage;

A BET cut to the city levy makes it harder for Council to restore the Mayor's cuts to climate action, violence prevention, housing inspections, health, and BIPOC & immigrant programs. He made those cuts rather than stop MPD overspending. Parks need BET support and so does City Council.

False choice. The limited amount of money going to unarmed public safety programs shouldn’t be pitted against each other while the police budget continues to balloon. We can have both & should be expanding both into more neighborhoods so more people can have access to additional safety responses.

Here’s what the DOJ says the purpose of this funding is. The City of Minneapolis partnering with the federal government on a grant when this is their stated purpose of funding is a non-starter for me. Read the whole document here: lims.minneapolismn.gov/Download/RCA...
1. BASIC INFORMATION
Purpose of the Funding
The Office of Justice Programs (OJP) is committed to advancing work that furthers the U.S. Department of Justice's (DOJ) mission to keep our country safe and secure and uphold the rule of law and protect the rights of American citizens. This NOFO is authorized under Public Law 119-21, Title X, Subtitle A, Part II, Section 100055 (codified at 34 U.S.C. §61101), which provides funding to enhance capacity to locate and apprehend aliens who have committed crimes) under Federal, State, or local law, in addition to being unlawfully present in the United States, investigate crimes committed by illegal aliens, counter gang and criminal activity including drug and human trafficking operations, support prosecutions, coordinate with federal immigration enforcement partners, and strengthen multi-jurisdictional responses to transnational criminal organizations threatening American communities.
This grant program is a collaboration between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Office of Justice Programs' (OJP) Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) to provide state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies with funding to acquire modern ballistic imaging equipment and implement crime gun intelligence best practices.
This is an invitation to apply notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) for the FY 2026 National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) Modernization Program.
This program will modernize NIBIN technology at 194 existing sites currently utilizing outdated technology. Grant funds will cover the cost of new NIBIN-compatible equipment and maintenance costs for five years. Eligible applicants are entities listed in Appendix 1.
See the Eligible Applicants section for eligibility details.

• Prohibits city resources and city employees from interfering with anyone's ability to receive gender-affirming or intersex care.

• Prohibits the City from accepting or distributing grant funds that would require the city to limit the rights of individuals based on gender, gender expression, gender identity or sexual orientation.

• Prohibits data-sharing agreements that could be weaponized against 2SLGBTQIA+ people.

• Requires City employee health plans to provide coverage for gender-affirming care and the healthcare needs of the interse community.

• Requires all-gender ADA accessible restrooms in city-owned and leased buildings, gender-neutral signage on single-user restrooms, and prohibits denying anyone access to a restroom consistent with their gender identity in city facilities.
