Finished my first actual, real woodworking project. It’s a chessboard for my kid and @katespace.com made the pieces.

My chessboard with pieces (by @katespace) in place, though I put the pieces in the wrong places. The bottom right corner should be a light square and it’s not. Anyway, the light pieces are set up closer to the camera. The background is my dining room table.

There is a thicker trim around the outside that is canarywood. It has been finished with shellac which makes it look a little warmer than the bare wood. It is sitting on a workbench at LowellMakes.

So, anyway, yeah. @katespace.com, the kid, and I were just in Finland above the Arctic circle for the last week.

I made soup, so I burned my mouth. As is tradition.

The noodles are gluten free penne noodles, and sitting on top of the noodles are celery and carrots because the noodles were cooked separately and put in the bowl first In the background is my laptop, because I'm eating this whle sitting on the couch.

The kid is reading our Calvin and Hobbes books and got to this strip, whereupon he asked me to explain the last panel. Because people (well, this household anyway) don't have thermometers hanging outside their windows anymore. We just have phones.

Panel 1: Calvin is speaking to his mother, who is seated in an armchair.
Calvin: How cold is it outside?

Panel 2: Calvin is running to the door, because Calvin basically can't walk anywhere. Despite it being obvious now, they didn't diagnose ADHD in 6 year olds as easily in 1990.

Panel 3: Calvin is standing in an open outside door, air currents and snow blowing inside the house. Calvin is unfazed by the cold.

Panel 4: Same situation, but zoomed out a bit. Calvin is covered in snow, implying he's been standing there for some time. He is still unfazed. His mom, now angry, is reaching toward him, presumably with the intent to remove him from this situation and close the door.
Calvin: It's pretty darn cold, I'd say.
Mom: Let me show you an interesting gadget that's hanging outside the window.

Oh! There was a deer in the neighbor's yard the other day!

Also, despite not looking like there was a whole lot on there, I casually pulled 2 pints of (genetically enhanced) cherry tomatoes off the vines yesterday (they have blueberry coloring for increased antioxidants).

Two pint-sizes plastic takeout containers (like you'd get from Indian takeout, for example), overfull with cherry tomatoes, but they're a deep blue, almost black -- they have a gene inserted so they have blueberry-like coloring for increased antioxidant production. Most of them have the crown on them. The containers are sitting on a light-colored wooden countertop.
