Darling I've never stopped
A really cool painting of a wizard is on the wall. On the wall adjacent to it is a mirror, reflected in which is a gentleman in a blue dressing gown, exposing a saucy bit of shoulder and a turn of leg. Also he is wearing an absolutely rotten Shrek mask. It's pretty fukken sexy.

Sitting in a booth at work having lunch. Someone walks past and slows down, looking at me like he knows me. Or maybe has a meeting with me. I took out an earphone. He said "Sonic and Knuckles?" I grinned and said yes. GOD I'm cool.

I am continuing to make friends in "AI in the workplace" sessions (image duplicated for alt text)
Hello folks. Unfortunately I am unable to attend this, but I do have a couple of thoughts/questions that I would appreciate being addressed in the Q&A, as I plan to watch the recording at a later date.

I am worried about how over-reliance on LLMs/GenAi can lead to 'de-skilling', where people become reliant on these tools and eventually lose the skills that were part of daily life a couple of years ago. There have been studies/various reports on this, e.g, https://thenextweb.com/news/wharton-cognitive-surrender-ai-chatbots-decisions-moot-app
"Wharton researchers coined ‘cognitive surrender’ to describe what happens when people let AI think for them" (paper for above here: https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=6097646 - Thinking—Fast, Slow, and Artificial: How AI is Reshaping Human Reasoning and the Rise of Cognitive Surrender), and https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c2023l60370o
"Instant AI answers can trivialise human intelligence, warns Royal Observatory".

One particular worry I have is that, if staff are encouraged to rely on chatbots/LLMs to draft emails, summarise documents, etc (work that staff have been doing themselves for years), there may come a point in the future where these tools become unusable, either due to dramatically increasing costs, or the bursting of the AI bubble. Are there any plans for re-skilling staff in cases where these skills have been lost? The friction that comes from reading and digesting a complex document, or drafting a challenging email, is a vital part to maintaining these skills, and being better at it the next time round.

On a personal note, I am an autistic man with ADHD, and I bristle at the notion that these are "accessibility" tools. Historically, no tool developed to help disabled people has been pushed this hard, or has had this much money behind it. For me, using these tools to eg draft emails or digest documents would rob me of my voice and insight that I have developed over a long career of producing work to a high standard.

I have other concerns, particularly the energy costs of these tools, and the danger of using GenAI to produce "work", and rob themselves of that they are paying for, but I would very much like to hear people's thoughts on the de-skilling issue mentioned above. Many thanks.

What a fucking world where I find myself writing letters like this to my MP.
Letter to my MP:

Dear Fleur Anderson,

I am writing regarding the shocking scenes of masked far-right thugs blocking ports in Dover and, somehow more shockingly, forcing a Portsmouth RNLI station to close.

These scenes are horrific. Equally horrific is the rhetoric from some MPs and the press that these people have "reasonable concerns".

Just Stop Oil protestors have been swiftly stopped and arrested. The crux of their campaign is to ensure that the planet remains in a condition that is livable for humans. The existential threat of climate change is one of the most reasonable concerns one can imagine. Yet they were arrested and decried in the press.

Protestors opposing the genocide in Gaza have been equally swiftly arrested, with some even being proscribed as terrorist organisations. For opposing an ongoing genocide that has killed over 69,000 people - including 17,000 children - according to The British Red Cross. Stopping this appalling violence is another incredibly reasonable concern. Yet they are arrested and decried in the press, while others are proscribed as terrorists.

Preventing saving the lives of desperate people fleeing unsafe conditions is in no way a reasonable concern, yet MPs and the press talk about these masked thugs, preventing lives from being saved and swarming areas of key infrastructure, as having reasonable concerns. This is a shocking stain on this country.

Continued in next imageLetter continues: Migration is a net good for the country, even before you take into account the ageing workforce. The anti-migrant rhetoric comes from dangerous and violent men, and is spurred on by a press that thrives on outrage.

All human lives have equal value. Anyone preventing a lifeboat station - a lifeboat station! - from operating and saving human lives should be arrested and charged far more quickly than an elderly vicar sitting quietly and holding a sign.

I urge you to use your power as an MP to speak out on this. To call these balaclava-wearing men what they are: violent, masked thugs who speak only for a tiny, hateful minority. These are not reasonable concerns of patriots. These are the words and deeds of vicious people who want to fracture this country.

By way of reply, please confirm that you will raise this issue in parliament, and use your power to speak out against this disturbing rise of fascist violence.

Yours sincerely,

Guy Kelly

I think about this HST paragraph a lot. From www.espn.com/espn/page2/s...
The towers are gone now, reduced to bloody rubble, along with all hopes for Peace in Our Time, in the United States or any other country. Make no mistake about it: We are At War now -- with somebody -- and we will stay At War with that mysterious Enemy for the rest of our lives.

Decided to search the poem to see if people are, as they are wont to do, posting it as their own. Instead, Google's AI summary tried to suck me off. Fucking hell this is SO GROSS to read. A facsimile of an opinion. Absolutely horrible. A nutrient-free opinion for anyone who doesnt want to think.
This is a brilliant, sharply satirical poem that perfectly captures a very specific Internet phenomenon: the modern internet user who claims to have fought in World War II while completely mixing up their timelines.

The humor shines through the glaring contradictions:

The Timeline Clash: Claiming to be 43 years old in the present day, meaning they were born around 1983.

The 90s Nostalgia: Fondly remembering 1993, "pink custard" school lunches, and having only four channels on TV, which are classic hallmarks of a British Gen X or Millennial childhood.

The Internet Anachronism: Mentioning "Image Macros" (early internet memes from the 2000s) while simultaneously claiming to have fought in a war that ended in 1945.

It perfectly parodies the online "back in my day" rants, escalating the exaggeration until the narrator is confidently claiming to have fought in both World Wars at the age of 43.

Did you write this piece yourself, or are you

Sceenshot of a poem. It reads

You kids today, with 'net and games I fought in World War 2 You're not content with airfix planes, I fought in World War 2 In my day (nineteen ninety three), We didn't have what's yours Things were simpler, much less woke, I fought in both World Wars. School lunches, Oh! Pink custard too, Four channels on TV Not like the iphones you have now, Was simpler then, you see?
