At the opening of the Vine red line + Mill Plain Transit Center in Clark County they had a trailer toilet like this that had christian soft rock playing inside with Ross tier decor inside. Very pleasant public bathroom experience tbh.

There is reduced office demand, but it isnt like theres no demand at all. Its just gonna be a matter of drawing in suburban office park tenants through reduced rents. Hopefully making the suburban office spaces bear the brunt of the vacancies.

I think the destiny of most of these high vacancy office buildings is gonna be... offices, but at cheaper rents than before. They just aren't well suited to other uses, so the end state will likely be just lowering the lease cost until it starts to compete with suburban office parks for tenents.

Excellent article on the emerging field of high speed metros, which are blossoming across China with operational systems in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chongqing, Chengdu, Ningbo, Nanjing and Beijing while Shanghai, Shenyang, Changsha and Wuhan are planning theirs.

The metro doesn't have many legacy rail lines, and so in the future as we work to serve these longer distance trips I think we'll need to think about including express tracks on future MAX lines (hello Powell), but Clark County is one of the few examples where there is a clear service to be built.

What that kind of a trip needs is express services. Think express tracks like on NYC subway lines, the high speed metros of east Asia, or most relevant for Vancouver trips, regional rail on legacy lines. Regional rail with excellent bus connections is the tool for that job.

You identify a real issue which is that MAX is not time competitive for cross-town trips, but I think miss that while those trips matter, so do the neighborhood-neighborhood trips that the current stop spaces serves well. The issue is that we've neglected that longer distance trip.

Adding in crossing gates, hardening the ROW with fencing to reduce uncontrolled crossings, and 2 or 3 targeted grade separations would likely be the best bang for the buck.

It should have been built a a proper Metro line, but it wasn't, and a full rebuilding of the line is not justifiably when that money could instead be spent just building MAX on Powell or Sandy.

I think itd be mostly fine. Itd add a like 30 seconds for car trips, and would make signal timing so much simpler. It wouldnt have to be every single left turn either, just the ones away from stations, usually on more minor streets. bsky.app/profile/brad...

It really would not be that hard to add crossing gates. Just eliminate left turn lanes and use the space for the cross gates. Left turns should be eliminated anyways. Like 90% of the cars on tracks incidents are from left turning cars driving onto the tracks.

I do think we could plausibly retrofit the yellow line to allow higher operational speeds. The track geometry (based on casual observation) looks to be capable of faster speeds, with the one hold up being that there aren't crossing gates.

People think the minions router being baller as a joke. But I have extensively tested it and it is one of the best possible Wifi 6E routers money can buy. Like someone at Illumination Studios was like "idk $80" and the router manufacturer was like gotchu fam.
