in my angriest moments i think, "i have every right to leave. if anybody knew what she'd done they'd say i was an idiot for sticking around. i'm doing this because i'm a better person than she could ever be." and that's not entirely untrue. but it's all so complicated.

she was severely abusive for most of my life, and i didn't understand HOW severely until maybe four years into intensive therapy. i can't think about some of that stuff without feeling sick. but knowing she's terminally ill--knowing how ugly and miserable an illness--is harder than i'd imagined.

i feel little tenderness toward this woman other than that which comes with seeing someone vulnerable who has been effectively abandoned, largely as a consequence of her own actions (and inaction--she's never reached out to anybody but expects them to come to her). but nevertheless.

it's a combination of naivety and projection, i suspect. a lot of my problems with fellow leftists come from qualities that i don't think START bad--it's good, generally, to assume people are principled and operating in good faith--but when someone shows you who they are REPEATEDLY...come on.

anyway, my younger brother had to be rushed into emergency surgery last weekend because he almost died, and going forward he will technically have a permanent (mostly invisible) disability. this is not about me, but it's fucking me up nonetheless; none of us, incl. him, knew HOW SICK he really was
