Universities are tearing apart the humanities, arts and social sciences. Courses are closing, jobs are disappearing, and students and staff are paying the price. At Exeter, 85% of proposed job cuts targeted these disciplines. We need university leaders who will defend education mot destroy it.

The EHRC chair either does not understand the principle of rights, or has decided to gaslight trans individuals while stripping those rights. The EHCR code undermines, and, arguably in several ways, outright violates rights for trans individuals, including Articles 8, 11, and 14 of the ECHR. 1/
EHRC chair: Trans activists wrong to claim single-sex code limits rights

Guidance on single-sex spaces based on the Supreme Court judgment still protects transgender people, Mary-Ann Stephenson has said

One of the common arguments from so called "gender criticals", transphobes, is "what rights are trans people losing". The answer is so many. Just today we have seen in practice that trans people are being excluded from healthcare., to add to public spaces, education etc. It all costs lives.
Trans people should use hospital spaces according to biological sex, NHS England saysThe UK's new plan for trans students: bathroom bans, forced outing, & no social transitions

The plan is likely to place trans and gender non-conforming children at greater risk.Single-sex spaces open to the public, such as toilets and changing rooms, should be organised based on biological sex, according to official guidance that has come into force.

The code, published by Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), says trans people should use either gender-neutral facilities or the ones that match their biological sex, in places such as gym changing rooms or rape crisis centres.Trans people are dying of suicide more than the general UK population, data shows

By Alice McCool and Ludovic Parsons

Investigation finds that trans people make up 1% of the UK population and 7% of child suicides, but official data is full of holes

She is not wrong. It has been repeatedly shown that a slowdown in care for patients because of lack of space or other obstacles leads to worse care outcomes. This is going to lead to trans people being left deteriorating and dying in corridors because they cannot find a 'third space' room for them.

The NHS's revised guidance on single-sex wards is cruel, unworkable and LGBTIQA+ Greens calls on Labour to withdraw it and reform the Equality Act.
The NHS revised guidance does not offer privacy, dignity or safety to trans people.
Placing trans people on the incorrect “same-sex” hospital wards by default is wrong and unworkable, which is why it also states exceptions for clinical need and a mention of alternative provision.
This is a continuation of the incomprehensible interpretation of the Equality Act 2010 that the supreme court ruled for. We call on the Labour government to withdraw this guidance and reform the Equality Act to end the policing of trans people in single gendered spaces.

Of course, in some cases an amoral psychological is better than an immoral one!

Bijan Parsia @bparsia.bsky.social · 4h
And I meant something like “functioning moral psychology”. The risk isn’t just that you do evil, it’s that you become insensitive to a broad class of moral considerations, feelings, concerns. Ie you risk an amoral psychology.

That doesn’t mean we should never do utilitarian style reasoning. If we’re serving on an ethics board deciding organ allocation we have to. But we should be sensitive to it’s limits and risks
010
Bijan Parsia @bparsia.bsky.social · 4h
But I take the Williams concern seriously. There is something odd about treating your moral decision making as a utility calculus. The uniformity of it, the ability to scale to any problem, the certainty of it might just be at odds with moral psychology.
130
Bijan Parsia @bparsia.bsky.social · 4h
There are risks involved in thinking that way. They’re just risks, not guarantees. You may remain and awesome and generous person. You may become a weird longtermer. Maybe it’s the presence of other factors that matter.
100
Bijan Parsia @bparsia.bsky.social · 4h
The person who donates a lot of money while doing such calculations probably has an edge over someone who doesn’t donate at all and perhaps has it over someone who donates for clout. But it’s not the same kind of reasoning that policy makers are doing even if superficially looks similar.
100
Bijan Parsia @bparsia.bsky.social · 4h
I think trying to do such on an individual level is even more risky. It’s not a good way to do moral reasoning esp if you try to do the analysis yourself. This is a good thing to largely outsource. Is it the worst thing ever? Obviously not.

Civil wrongful death suits award calculated damages. Health systems decide to fund some treatments and not others. To do these in at least marginally consistent way we quantified. Some lives are worth $x and some $y. This is not a simple undertaking and it is *fraught*.
110
Bijan Parsia @bparsia.bsky.social · 4h
Public health folks, environment regulators, food safety people, judges, medical regulators and funders need ways to make decisions that affect millions in complex ways. So they turn to life quantification of various sorts. We give monetary awards for pain and suffering.
110
Bijan Parsia @bparsia.bsky.social · 4h
It’s really tempting to build a theory for this so maybe it’s better to leave it as a primitive judgment. Now when we scale up to large cohorts and general allocation decisions and harder to compare trade offs things get tricky fast.
100
Bijan Parsia @bparsia.bsky.social · 4h
So, triage. We make some care decisions according to need and likely benefit. This is clear in emergency situations. It’s clear in extreme scarcity situations. Giving a kidney to someone who is highly likely to die the next day instead of the person likely to live a long time seems off.
110
Bijan Parsia @bparsia.bsky.social · 4h
There are circumstances where societies and people in them need to compare lives to determine how to allocate scarce resources. I mean we don’t *have* to…we could give organs on a first come first serve basis. But that leads to a lot of avoidable loss.
100
Bijan Parsia @bparsia.bsky.social · 4h
It’s also ok for me to make a whole raft of decisions in line with that. I will make her cake. I will care for her when ill. I’ll plan my life around her as she does for me. So while we all are of equal worth that doesn’t mean I have uniform behaviors toward all.
110
Bijan Parsia @bparsia.bsky.social · 4h
Qua person she and I and all the people in the world still have equal inherent value. Finding good language to tease out these differences is a job of work I won’t undertake. That being said I think it’s ok that my loved ones mean more to me than other people do.
110
Bijan Parsia @bparsia.bsky.social · 4h
And yet I personally value some people more than others. I love my sweetie and it shows in the things I would do for her that I wouldn’t do for most people in the world. But it’s not quite assessing her value but what she means to me.
110
Bijan Parsia @bparsia.bsky.social · 4h
I think in many many cases it’s bad to compare the value of lives and esp bad to compare them with some sort of quantitative precision. This is a bit of Kantianism in me. People are ends in themselves & have intrinsic incommensurable worth. (Except for Jack who dumps his leaves in my yard and Trump)

When making big system decisions you need *something* like that. I hope that clears it up?
000
Bijan Parsia @bparsia.bsky.social · 5h
I think the problem with the specific one is due to it being ad hoc, inexpert analysis. Also, to be clear, I don’t think the expert teams necessarily get it write (they evolve their metrics) but they also have little choice.

6) If you prefer one because you think they are saving more valuable people, I have concerns.
000
Bijan Parsia @bparsia.bsky.social · 5h
3) If you want to use their work to guide your giving that seems fine. 4) If you do ad hoc versions of it on your own I think that isn’t great. See the order of magnitude difference in the estimate. 5) If you have a personal motive for one charity (eg because of a relative) I think that’s fine.
100
Bijan Parsia @bparsia.bsky.social · 5h
Let me sum up and then I’m going to stop for a while I think: 1) Giving sizeable sums to non scam charities is great and mostly independent of why you did it (trying to whitewash crimes being an obvious exception) 2) Public health folks have worked for decades on ways to guide resource allocations

Bijan Parsia @bparsia.bsky.social · 5h

I mean yes but also it has standard methodological limits? Like you wouldn’t use it to predict responses in a non hypothetical situaiton. WHO abandoned age weighting for what it’s worth.

Bijan Parsia @bparsia.bsky.social · 5h
“Forced to choose” is doing some work there.
100
Bijan Parsia @bparsia.bsky.social · 6h
There are triage situations and they are damn tricky. Bernard Williams wrote about a characteristic peril of utilitarianism, kind of overconfidence in calculation.
100
Bijan Parsia @bparsia.bsky.social · 6h
But I think it gets perilous when you start making ad hoc quantitative sorta precise comparative judgements about people’s worth. I think there’s a different between “I am moved by these people so give to then” and “these people are worth less so I’ll give to these others”.
