Miss the good ol' days when I could let the spiders surf the internet and give me specific and relevant information. Y'all how did we manage to make the basic Google search *worse?* When I query a search, I don't want to be queried with an AI slop grenade. I just want to know if the bar is open.

The thread has been so lost, and I'm nearly enraged that we've forgotten the mission of knowledge: learn, struggle, reassemble, repeat. Increasingly, our students and ourselves are so damned focused on "one shot, get it right" and the end result? Hamburger Helper instead of burgers.

New shoes for BMO! In last night's Onondaga Community College ATC103, we went to work on getting the Jeep a new set of tires and sensors. Learned quite a bit about the many different systems involved in something seemingly as "basic" as tire mounting.

Working as a professor with a global research agenda and many partners - both industry and academic - off-campus, Outlook's "external sender" flag is just about the worst warning I've ever received. It'd be the rough equivalent of telling me that my coffee is hot, always.

Curious who suffers more from banal/generic/vague AI application materials in academia: aspiring PhD students looking for admissions, or graduating folks looking to score their first faculty job? Honest question.

Although you're right that there is no "right" answer for every case, we do have general guidelines. Section 6.36 of the Publication Manual (7th ed.) says that "when properly scaled, most data can be effectively presented with two decimal digits of accuracy."

I see this a lot as a grad director or what my students think they need for jobs is nowhere near the reality of what they need for jobs. But when I give that feedback, the advice is quickly rejected as privilege.

Nick Bowman (包尼克) he/him/his @bowmanspartan.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Precisely. I think we are far too quick to accept perceived norms as rules. And those perceived norms hardly ever match reality. I mean, certainly, if you publish five books, you'll probably be a good case for tenure, but it's not because you published five books.

But I do think it's an important conversation to have, because so often we witness bad behavior, pointed out, and then promptly do nothing about it. It's baffled me for 20 years and it's made me a bit unpopular in some circles. But then again, I used to own a St Louis Rams Tony Banks jersey ...

And as somebody who's currently on a tenure committee and has served in the past, my appetite for "counting the numbers" is just not there. And I think people would be surprised at the sophistication of external reviewers and spotting bad trends. All to say: we have control over this.
120
Nick Bowman (包尼克) he/him/his @bowmanspartan.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
But I would also say that there's the narrative around how much you need to publish versus the reality around how much you need to publish. I think for some reason people just don't want to talk about this because they're afraid of reprisal.

Nick Bowman (包尼克) he/him/his @bowmanspartan.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
I mean sure. I'm just saying that one of those is an ongoing more general publication? I think when we conflate extreme edge cases to push an ongoing problem we end up confusing both.

Nick Bowman (包尼克) he/him/his @bowmanspartan.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
But it's also a crisis completely on our control. When folks do stuff like this, they get dragged pretty badly. But I think we have to be careful about confusing bad actors with crises. For instance, hiring committees could actually read the papers people have published. They just don't.

Nick Bowman (包尼克) he/him/his @bowmanspartan.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
It's not a crisis. One person's shit behavior is ... one person's shit behavior. And they're pinched. We need to quite using "evidence of a bad actor" as "evidence of all bad actors." My neighbor once embezzled seven figures from a bank. It doesn't mean that I'm about to do it.

It really is striking how many authoritarian states have ended up in this exact same place, where the leader seizes control of scientific inquiry. Lysenkoism in the Soviet Union, Aryan Physics in the Third Reich, Great Leap Forward (also related to Lysenko) in China.
