See, this is also studied, everyone believes they'd be happier at twice their annual revenue, independently of actual absolute revenue, and yes that includes billionaires. But hey, if we can't rely on the closest way to know if things are true or not, is it worth arguing

Science says (well, said, as it's a 10 years old study) that objective happiness will increase up to 70,000 dollars per year for a two people house, and then we get into diminishing returns. Adjust with inflation and stop working above that threshold

TIL: automatically signing Git commits and adding signoffs
For a new work project, I had to set up GPG signing and add the `signed-off-with` trailer to all my commit messages. I’m using `lazygit`, so while these options are available in the command line, I needed some more general way to do this. Here’s how I’ve done it, in case it’s useful to other folks. ## 🔗What is signing? Signing is committing a proof that you are who you claim you are, and/or that you are the one who did what you did. In some ways, it is the reciprocal operation of encrypting: signing (=~ “encrypting”) some public content makes use of your private key, so that people on the other end can check the signature (=~ “decrypt”) with the public key, and assert that the decrypted content is what they see too. ## 🔗Setting up GPG These commands have been tested against `gpg` version 2.4.9. Create a new key: gpg --full-generate-key Show a list of your known keys: gpg -k Note the long ID for your key (a string of random letters and numbers), then export it: gpg --armor --export LONG_ID This can then be copied into your Github/Gitlab settings, in the GPG key section. ## 🔗Verify commits with GPG signing You can decide to commit and sign individual commits: git commit -S Then, you can check that a commit has been signed by looking at the log; it’s not displayed by default: git log --show-signature …Or request to always commit and sign with a GPG key, which can be handy if you’re using nice external tools wrapping `git` like lazygit: Within the context of one git repository: git config commit.gpgsign true git config user.signingkey LONG_ID Or if you want to do it for _all_ your projects, add `--global` to these commands. ## 🔗Bonus: always add `Signed-off-with` mention to your commits You can do it on a per-commit basis as well [1]: git commit -s Use the following git hook, by writing a new file in `${PROJECT}/.git/hooks/prepare-commit-msg`: #!/bin/sh NAME=$(git config user.name) EMAIL=$(git config user.email) if [ -z "$NAME" ]; then echo "empty git config user.name" exit 1 fi if [ -z "$EMAIL" ]; then echo "empty git config user.email" exit 1 fi git interpret-trailers --if-exists doNothing --trailer \ "Signed-off-by: $NAME <$EMAIL>" \ --in-place "$1" Make sure the git hook is executable with: chmod +x ${PROJECT}/.git/hooks/prepare-commit-msg Courtesy of this StackOverflow answer. 1. Yay for the options being `-s` for adding the `signed-off-with` mention in the commit message, and `-S` for signing with GPG. Ergonomics, amirite? ↩

Notes hebdomadaires #84
Pas encore lu, mais j’ai cru y voir des trucs intéressants 👀 * What do you do when your favorite programming language has a fascism problem? On adore.

Updating the blog to Zola 0.23
It’s been more than a month that the blog wasn’t mentioned in a blog post. Let’s fix that. This website is proudly powered by Zola, the Rust blog templating engine. I’m pretty satisfied by it, as it can compile my entire blog in less than half-a-second on all my machines, including the blog’s CI. A new 0.23 version has been released as of August 5th of this month. The changelog nicely documents what changes were needed. In particular, as part of the migration to the version 2 of the Tera templating engine, the concepts of shortcodes and macros have been unified into a single one called _components_ , and I found it a nice simplification, in terms of learning how to use it. Changes to the theme I’m using and maintaining, `sonj`, were pretty mechanical. There’s been only one surprising change that took me a bit of time to resolve: the date library used by Tera has changed under the hood, and the new one didn’t support the `%+` format used throughout the `sonj` theme. It turns out that this specific format, inherited from the strftime C function, would render a date as a ISO8601 string, like e.g. `2026-08-18T00:00:00+00:00`, as in the return value of the `date --iso-8601=seconds` command. But this format has never been quite properly defined apparently, and it’s not supported everywhere, so the `jiff` time Rust library explicitly doesn’t support it. A migration path is to create a custom format string that’s verbose but equivalent: %Y-%m-%dT%H:%M:%S+00:00 I haven’t included a time zone information in the date, because I didn’t find it relevant; your mileage may vary. I’ve also mentioned this migration path in an issue on the Tera repository, so that the changelog notes can be updated accordingly hopefully, and it can help others. Anyways, here’s to me finding excuses to write on my blog 🥳

The worst spidermonkey bug I had to debug was caused by a *small* wasm file: """only""" 50 MB, which resulted in a WAT file of a million lines. Bisection (remove half the code, see if it runs and reproduces) helped a lot. A week to reduce the test case, and of course, a 3 lines fix. Good luck!

Stand by this: www.politico.com/newsletters/...
What’s a technology that you think is overhyped?

I’m going to give a sideways answer to this, which is that the venture capital business model needs to be understood as requiring hype. You can go back to the Netscape IPO, and that was the proof point that made venture capital the financial lifeblood of the tech industry.

Venture capital looks at valuations and growth, not necessarily at profit or revenue. So you don’t actually have to invest in technology that works, or that even makes a profit, you simply have to have a narrative that is compelling enough to float those valuations. So you see this repetitive and exhausting hype cycle as a feature in this industry. A couple of years ago, you would have been asking me about the metaverse, then last year, you would have asked me about Web3 and crypto, and for each of these inflection points there’s an Andreessen Horowitz manifesto.

It’s not simply that one piece of technology is overhyped, it’s that hype is a necessary ingredient of the current business ecosystem of the tech industry. We should examine how often the financial incentive for hype is rewarded without any real social returns, without any meaningful progress in technology, without these tools and services and worlds ever actually manifesting. That’s key to understanding the growing chasm between the narrative of techno-optimists and the reality of our tech-encumbered world.
