In a mighty clash of the personal & professional, I've just learned that my 7x great grandfather David Beynon was one of 290 men and boys who died aboard HMS Severn (on left) during George Anson's catastrophic attempt to conquer the Spanish Pacific. Happy weekend! www.rmg.co.uk/collections/...

The fallacy that University leaders pushing AI are falling into is thinking that the point of undergraduate research is to find things out. It isn't. What students find out is typically already generally known. The point of undergraduate research is to learn how to find things out.

On this day in 1937, SS Habana arrived in Southampton from Bilbao. On board were around 3,840 Basque children who had been evacuated from the Spanish Civil War. They were taken to a volunteer-run camp at North Stoneham before being relocated to homes across the country.

In fact, yes, I do think it’s a widespread social crisis that students are going to be graduating without the capacity to think critically and without subject matter knowledge. At a time when technofascism prevails, more of us should be terrified about the consequences of universalizing gAI use.

Just came across a new favourite census entry. Miss Josephine Regidor (daughter of a Philippines-born Spanish lawyer in London) responded to the 'occupation' question on the 1911 census with: "Mind my house & own business." I like her already :)

It's a month since I checked in here, but I've been busy with my #OnePlaceStudy #Genealogy and #LocalHistory. I had fun recreating this Edwardian postcard of Meeting House Lane in #BalsallCommon #Berkswell #OldnallEnd. Amazing how much remains the same 120 years later!
Hand-tinted postcard of a street scene; large tree to the left, lane running away in the centre, white-painted corner shop to the right, with other buildings lining the lane. Several people in Edwardian dress stand in front of the shop, one with a bicycle.Photograph taken in 2025 of the scene from the postcard; the same tree to the L although it's winter so it has no leaves, the same lane (now a road) running away in the centre, lined with houses; the same white-painted corner shop, now with bright blue signage and paint to the ground floor. No people!

I guess you at some point need to consider whether the simultaneous rise of "AI" & of a generation that simply does not know how to digest information critically will lead inexorably to a society which JUST DOES WHAT THE MACHINES TELL IT TO DO, & whether we really, really ought to mind about that.

4. I don’t say that left and right have no meaning (generally, people who make this claim have recently moved to the far right). But the real political divide is between those who grovel to capital (a group extending all the way from Starmer to Farage) and those who seek to resist.
