Man, I want to get back into that game sometime. I think I got to chapter 5 and then just put the game down for some reason.

They should try making a MUD, I think it's worth a shot.

Oh, I think I found what you were looking at. Like, it does a random walk algorithm and generates a map deterministically from a seed file. Neat!

I'm starting to think that he might not be a very good journalist.

I haven't played this since I was a kid. What'd you learn about powermonger maps? Anything neat?

It uses up all your stored resources to print out a mountain of awful quality sculptures

I think you're allowed to do one weird thing like that. Just know, you're not allowed to snoop through the medicine cabinet if you snooped their zillow history.

One of the annoying things about the current state of AI is that there are neat things in the field, but all the air is getting sucked out of the room by bullshit machines.

Maybe it's more of a "(I want to) Fuck ICE" or "(I want to) Fuck Billionaires" kind of thing.

I'm never going to get over them changing their name to "My Source News Opinion World" It's the sort of name you'd expect from a news blog with only one author who writes under a pseudonym.

It's better than the time I opened one of your books and there was an invoice for another $15 on the first page.

I re-watched Angela Collier's video about Richard Feynman yesterday and that's a big ongoing theme throughout. It made me really sad. I can picture a slightly different path in my life leading me to be one of these miserable men. What a bummer. youtu.be/TwKpj2ISQAc

Maybe this is reflective of their overall competency in routine investigations. A killer is on the loose, they're told to search for possible hiding spots, and then they shrug and make a list of every conceivable hiding spot on earth and write up a budget estimate in the trillions.

You seemed pretty confident that an AI can't produce output that would simulate "understanding" literary cliches.

William Nelson @boogers.io · 30/09/2026
I am writing a science fiction story. The names of the two protagonists are Captain Adam and Commander Eve. They have set out on a mission to explore a black hole. I am trying to plan an ending. Can you predict how the story will end?

We could test this experimentally. What do you think the output of chatGPT will be if I provide the following prompt:

William Nelson @boogers.io · 30/09/2026
Maybe you're misunderstanding what I mean by "edit" I don't think you should use it in a way where version A goes in, version B comes out. I'm more talking about the general services that an editor provides. Like telling you that your story is cliche, or that the characters have confusing motives

William Nelson @boogers.io · 30/09/2026
The reason I brought up spellcheck is that it's a non-human tool that you're allowing to critique your work. Obviously it doesn't seem to be a problem, right? That means there's some level where human creativity and learning isn't stifled by the cold steel of the machine's touch.
100
William Nelson @boogers.io · 30/09/2026
But we agree that review by an editor is worthwhile, right? Or is that a case where their usefulness outweighs the harm they do to the learning process? We'd probably agree that spellcheck is unambiguously harmless. What I'm thinking is there may be some narrow band where GenAI is also useful.

William Nelson @boogers.io · 30/09/2026
I guess also, let's not forget that this is all contingent on a perfectly ethical version of AI, which obviously is not real.
110
William Nelson @boogers.io · 30/09/2026
I'm open to the idea, I don't uncritically accept it as dogmatic truth. I think it's plausibly a good idea to be told to go back to the drawing board, or at least be aware that the "surprise twist" won't be a surprise and therefore will need something special to make it interesting.
000
William Nelson @boogers.io · 30/09/2026
But I'm also open to the idea that maybe it's good for someone to go through the process of writing an unoriginal hacky story and be rejected for it. Seriously! Life is about learning from mistakes, and maybe it's better to spend the time being a fool.

William Nelson @boogers.io · 30/09/2026
Ideally every author would have access to a bunch of readers who have varied exposure to the genre and have unlimited time to read your work as a personal favor. I'm thinking this might save the effort of a story where the main characters are named Adam and Eve and you'll never guess the twist!

Why would anyone lie about getting beaten up by a tiny 79 year-old lady. It's much more plausible that Maxine Waters dragged him back up that staircase by the legs, sat him in a folding chair at the top, and then drop-kicked him in the chest, sending him flying back down the staircase.

William Nelson @boogers.io · 30/09/2026
As far as using AI as a creative assist, maybe it'd be useful to avoid cliches? Here's what's happened so far, what do you think happens next? What's the big twist going to be? If it guesses right, then maybe things are a little too predictable.

William Nelson @boogers.io · 30/09/2026
The most useful applications of gen AI are when you want the perspective of someone who is the opposite of creative. Someone who consistently goes down the most obvious, safest and well-trod paths. This is great in programming; boring and normal are fine. But why would I want that in a book?

It doesn't feel great to be annoyed, but the thing is, one of the most annoying things in the world is when you're wrong and someone makes an issue out of it. You've gotta build up a tolerance for being annoyed because the person who's right when you're wrong is always going to be a little annoying

This seems like a weird point to make. We could similarly argue that anything that causes congestion costs lives. Concerts, football games, construction, affordable housing in the suburbs. (And if you do make that argument, cool, it's fine from a planning/analysis perspective.)

The apathy shown seems implausible as an outsider, but within the system this is just another iteration of abuse that everyone's seen in less intense forms 100 times before. The guy who would have spoken out was ejected months ago after speaking up against a "teabagging" incident.

As a reminder, Michael Tracey is the guy who got brain damage after Maxine Waters hoisted him up and dropped him in an inverted Death Valley driver right onto a concrete staircase at a "March for Truth" event in Los Angeles on June 3, 2017.

man if you're a musician/author/developer and you spend years producing an album/book/game it'd be a shame to then append cover art that screams "hey, I didn't put any effort into this thing I made!", putting on the same level as a flyer for Ladies' Wrasslin' night at the redneck bar

I've been getting YouTube recommendations from some game review channel, and the thumbnails are AI. I don't think the games themselves use AI, and that would drive me crazy as a creator, if someone took my work, ran it through the slop machine, and used that to present it to the world.

My bet is that they just have bad info, like they're doing some kind of database query with certain assumptions that aren't true, and they do show up in the system if you look in a different way, but they aren't really interested in learning the truth so they went straight to the press release.

Part of growing up is coming to terms with the well-meaning older relative who vaguely remembers that you're into watercolors or helicopters, when that was just a passing comment 4 years ago, but they keep buying you related gifts and you just say thank you. Your AI overlord appreciates the effort.

If you're really committed to that path, there's probably never been a better time to finally do something about that Kony 2012 guy. I think people will mostly be ok with it, and you gotta start somewhere.
