Huge kudos to @standupforscience.bsky.social for many reasons, including that the DC event will have "accessible restroom facilities, seating areas, and ASL interpretation throughout the event." Thank you to all the amazing organizers and all putting in time to fight for science!

The future of disability health equity research is uncertain, but philanthropy has an opportunity to keep this essential work moving forward. Too often funders invest in academic centers & efforts not led by disabled people - that must change to address layered inequities disabled people face.

Data can drive justice or deepen inequities. Join CRDJ Director of Research & Policy, Kate Caldwell, and a powerhouse panel featuring Bonnielin Swenor, Rylin Rodgers, Elizabeth Lockwood, Charlotte McClain-Nhlapo to discuss the intersection of disability data justice, AI, and global technology.
A graphic of light and dark blue, purple, and gold arched shapes forms a quirky pattern where five headshots of panelists inset in similar arched frames are set. From left to right, the panelists are Elizabeth Lockwood, Rylin Rodgers, Kate Caldwell, Bonnielin Swenor, and Charlotte McClain-Nhlapo, with their names written at the base of their photos. Under this on a white rectangle, in tall thin font reads "Disability Data Justice in Global Contexts." To the right, the panel's date, time, and location are listed with the Harkin Summit logo underneath.

Major shout-out to @bonnieswenor.bsky.social (and the Disability Health Equity Research Network folks who *aren't* on Bsky) for their fierce advocacy and leadership around both this and the NIH's designation of people with disabilities as a population experiencing health inequities.

BREAKING: The Census Bureau is not moving forward with a proposed change to the American Community Survey's disability questions that could've shrunk a key estimated rate of disability in the U.S. by about 40%, Director Robert Santos says in a blog post www.census.gov/newsroom/blo...
The Census Bureau and the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) have carefully reviewed the public feedback. Based on that feedback, we plan to retain the current ACS disability questions for collection year 2025. Along with our colleagues at OMB, NCHS and other statistical agencies, we will continue our work with stakeholders and the public to better understand data needs on disability and assess which, if any, revisions are needed across the federal statistical system to better address those needs. Before the Census Bureau submits the final proposal for the 2025 ACS content for OMB’s approval, it will offer another opportunity for the public to provide feedback. As mentioned above, in spring 2024, the Census Bureau will publish a 30-day Federal Register notice summarizing the proposed 2025 ACS content, which will not include any changes to the existing disability questions. The Census Bureau will then review the feedback and submit the final proposed content for OMB review and approval.

The Census Bureau also wants to engage further with the public on the disability topic specifically. A significant theme in the Federal Register notice comments is a desire for more comprehensive engagement. In the spirit of a whole-of-government approach, the Census Bureau, NCHS, OMB and other federal partners are working together to make that happen...
