Ok look, Barkerville is obviously going to win. I won’t complain to @justinmcelroy.bsky.social. But Enchanted Forest deserves to put up a hell of a fight. It’s one of the few remaining of the classic Road Trip attractions, endearing and terrifying in equal measure. Please vote Enchanted Forest.

My mother wrote a book putting my young child in the cabin where dad tried to kill me. This is the review Amazon keeps taking down from this book listing: www.amazon.com/Granny-Annie... I am asking the internet to read my review instead of the sycophantic reviews there now. #signalboost
This book uses my daughter's likeness. She is visiting Granny Annie at the cabin in Northport, MI that Anne used to own. Her husband Walter took me there after I was diagnosed with autism when I was roughly the same age as my daughter is at time of publication. Walter was arrested in Grayling, Michigan that weekend. He had driven me, while very drunk, for 80 miles.

In that cabin, I begged to go to school the next day so I would not be "The Genetic Curse." That's why he drunkenly got in the car. Anne picked me up from the Grayling police station.

You can note this book doesn't depict me, just my daughter who was underage at the time of publication. My wife and I were not asked for permission for her likeness to be used. Minnesota's 2025 child media law may be applicable here.

For those confused:

On roughly the 40th anniversary of my father's arrest, my mother published a book depicting my child at the cabin my life was threatened at ~40 years prior. The cabin I begged for my life at. She has sent multiple copies of this book to me, unsolicited. I do not appear in the book.

Every time Anne yelled at me that she brought me into this world and she could take me out, she did so with the weight of that event crushing those words into me.

As for the story: It's a children's book where the children have no autonomy or agency as they are ordered around by Granny Annie. That seems true to real life: I had no agency or choice but to mask neurotypical because if I didn't...who knew what would happen?

I've included a photo of the multiple copies Anne has sent to me, unsolicited. Both copies have inscriptions in her handwriting admitting the little girl is my daughter.

I was told “You don’t have to live here.”

I was told “You can’t ask for help anymore.”

I was told “I will not attend your daughter’s birthday” because I hadn’t apologized for your feelings.

I was punished in the will.

Why do you publish my child’s likeness now, in the place I had to beg for my life?

There’s a lot here to be annoyed about but this passage stood out to me. The use of autism as an excuse for boundary-crossing behaviour is pervasive but I have always said that someone who is autistic but not an asshole will be mortified when they learn they’ve overstepped and will change behaviour.
In fact, he said, his own research showed that autistic people tend to differ in cognitive empathy (interpreting facial expressions and language) but not affective empathy (the internal response to others' feelings). "Once they know that someone is upset, it upsets them and they want to do something about it," he said. "There's a kind of myth that autistic people lack empathy."

At first glance Tidal music’s new AI policy seems pretty decent but it also seems to be very specific about targeting only 100% AI-generated music. So all a person would need to do is record themselves farting and put it in at the end of each song to get around it?
A screenshot of part of a recent email from Tidal. Reads:

Here are the highlights of our new Al Policy:
• Tidal will identify and tag Al-generated music in our app. Listeners will see an "Al" badge next to music we detect as wholly Al-generated.
• Tidal will not tolerate Al-generated music that impersonates an artist or group, or that facilitates fraudulent activity. We're implementing automatic tools to remove these releases immediately and on an ongoing basis.
• Tidal will not allow music that is 100% Al-generated to be monetized. No royalties will go to such releases, nor will Al-generated uploads be eligible for direct-to-fan sales.
• We will expand these policies to music that is substantially Al-generated when Al detection technology is sufficiently reliable to do so.

Accidental-bonsai raspberry update: preschooler reports “best raspberry ever”. I’ll have to take her word for now. So we’ll be looking forward to when this plant settles in and starts giving us more berries. Next up looks to be the wonky “fall gold” raspberries from the quoted post. 🌱

Here’s a pretty clear example of the importance of pollinators! Those underdeveloped berries didn’t get fully pollinated. They’re closer to ripe than the others because they’re from the plant’s first blossoms of the season. When ripe they’ll be fine to eat, just ugly. 🌱 🐝
A close up photograph of a raspberry plant with several green berries on it. Some of them look normal but some of them are missing most of their drupelets (the small segments each containing one seed that together make up a single raspberry). In this case, poor pollination is the culprit as these berries came from the plant’s first flowers of the season - they didn’t get enough attention from pollinators while the flowers bloomed. The later flowers didn’t have that problem and their berries are developing fine.

This raspberry transplant had a rough time compared to the other 2 but it looks like it’s going to bounce back and even give us a couple berries this season. Planted 3 types: purple, red, yellow. I picked this Tulameen for the red one because I like camping at the provincial park at Tulameen 🌱
A photograph of a small raspberry plant, Tulameen variety. A dead stick (what’s left of the original cane cutting) protrudes upward about a foot, twice as tall as the living growth. A single unripe raspberry cries “we’ll make it! Just you wait, I am but the first of many!”

I know some people think it’s a waste of time to try to mimic animal products instead of just making good vegan food. But imitations can be really useful in making the switch away from animal products easier for people who like the taste but not the ethics. This meets them where they’re at.
