I attended a seminar by freshly minted Nobel Laureate Francis Halzen many years ago and something he said stuck with me, but it takes some explaining, so this will be a (short) thread. The talk was about neutrino telescopes, and he started by explaining how rarely neutrinos interact with anything.

Recursive panda. (Source.)
An image titled "Recurisve Panda", with a picture of a waving panda labeled 'Panda' in the bottom left, and an image of the page "Recursive Panda" in the top right. The caption reads: "Figure . Recursive Panda. This picture, in which a panda appears recursively, is created by drawing the panda with a graphics editor that generates Postscript output and then adjusting the resulting Postscript code. The idea is borrowed from an example given by Reid."

Between 1036 and 1094 CE, a Jewish merchant hired a Nile riverboat to take him and 700 dinars worth of goods to Alexandria. Instead, the sailors murdered him and stole his cargo. The victim's father sent this petition to the Fatimid Caliph al-Mustansir, formally requesting that he arrest the crew.

A stylized owl with a white face and body, black-outlined features, and red eyes perches on a branch in front of a large red crescent moon shape, gripping a birch tree trunk with its talons. Hand-lettered text to the right reads "Tis the wise that visit" in hand-rendered text.
