Patriotism or ‘identity’ politics? In JCES, @bolandeira.bsky.social & @theoaiolfi.bsky.social show how Mélenchon’s vision of 'créolisation' shakes up the populist playbook - offering a path beyond nationalist appeals & the worn-out binary of universalism vs. particularism. doi.org/10.1080/1478...

We agree on this point. What I was pointing out in commenting on the original post is that these leaders don't take themselves too seriously—even if they don't like being mocked by their enemies. Paula Diehl has written about this too, and Pablo Stefanoni has a fine recent book on the subject.

I think we can indeed discuss whether Adorno was right about historical fascism, but today this trend seems clear to me. Milei, Trump, Bolsonaro (but also the late Berlusconi) are a mixture of a stern father and a buffoon—and I think this self-ironic side is what gives them their strength.
121
Thomás Zicman de Barros @bolandeira.bsky.social · 23/11/2024
The challenge today lies in the growing skill of authoritarian leaders to wield self-irony as a tool of power. As Adorno observed, the laughter of the powerful is the most dangerous kind—it neutralizes criticism by encouraging voters to "not take them seriously," while tyranny goes on unchecked.
