Maria Ressa was awarded the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize (with Dmitry Muratov) for "their efforts to safeguard freedom of expression, which is a precondition for #democracy and lasting peace." She is the first Nobel laureate from the Philippines. Happy birthday @mariaressa.bsky.social 🥳
A color photograph of Maria Ressa, born October 2, 1963, the pioneering Filipino journalist, co-founder of Rappler, and co-recipient of the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize. She is standing at a dark wooden podium, captured from the chest up. Smiling broadly with an expression of joy and animation, she looks slightly to the right of the frame. She wears thin, rimless eyeglasses, a black turtleneck, and a textured, patterned blazer in shades of cream and light pink or soft orange. Her right hand is raised forward with her palm open and fingers extended in a welcoming, expressive gesture, while her left hand grips the flexible neck of a black microphone attached to the podium. The warm, soft-focus background suggests a grand indoor lecture hall or auditorium with architectural details. The bright, direct lighting emphasizes her optimistic and commanding presence, reflecting her historical significance as a fearless champion of freedom of expression and democratic resilience.

Immunologist and educator Dr. Florence Sabin died #OTD in 1953. The first woman to hold a full professorship at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine (where she graduated from in 1900) and the first woman elected to the National Academy of Sciences. #WomenInSTEM
A black-and-white historical photograph of pioneering scientist Dr. Florence Rena Sabin (1871–1953) in her laboratory workspace. Dr. Sabin, with her dark hair gathered back, wears thin, round wire-rimmed spectacles and a light-colored lab coat over a dark shirt. Seated in a dark wooden chair facing right, she pivots her upper body toward the camera with a calm, subtle smile. Her hands rest deliberately on a complex, vintage black microscope positioned on the desk before her. The laboratory setting features a dark wooden desk scattered with loose papers and a stack of documents. Behind her stands a tall wooden filing cabinet with numerous shallow drawers, while a large window to the right floods the scene with natural light, illuminating technical equipment nearby. The composition balances the scientific tools with her prominent, dignified presence, evoking an analytical yet warm and welcoming mood. This portrait highlights her legacy as the first woman elected to the National Academy of Sciences.

Dr. Jane Goodall died #OTD in 2025. She was a primatologist, anthropologist & conservationist regarded as the world’s foremost expert on wild chimpanzees. Her field research revolutionized our understanding of primates & redefined what it means to be human. janegoodall.org #WomenInSTEM
A feel-good photograph of world-renowned primatologist and anthropologist Dr. Jane Goodall (1934-2025), famous for her groundbreaking, decades-long study of wild chimpanzees in Gombe Stream National Park. In this intimate shot, Dr. Goodall is positioned on the right, her profile turned left toward a young chimpanzee resting its hand affectionately on her shoulder. Her gray hair is tied back in a signature low ponytail, and she wears a white button-up shirt with thin red and blue vertical stripes. Her eyes are closed, and her mouth is puckered as she mimics a vocalization, creating a profound, empathetic connection with the chimpanzee, who tilts its head back with its mouth wide open in a matching vocal expression. The background is a soft, blurred palette of green and tan nature tones, keeping the focus entirely on their interaction. The composition exudes a tender, joyful, and harmonious mood, highlighting the historical significance of her revolutionary approach to treating animals as individuals with minds, emotions, and distinct personalities.

A color photograph of the iconic American portrait photographer Annie Leibovitz (born October 2, 1949), celebrated for her era-defining celebrity portraits and her designation as a Library of Congress Living Legend. Facing forward, she maintains a serene, knowing expression with a slight, subtle smile, looking directly at the camera through rectangular, black-rimmed eyeglasses. Her long, silver-gray hair is loosely styled, swept slightly to one side. She is dressed in her signature utilitarian style, wearing a dark gray, long-sleeved button-down collared shirt with the sleeves relaxed and rolled up past her forearms. Her right hand rests confidently on her hip, while her left hand grips the top of a professional, medium-format Hasselblad film camera mounted securely on a tripod directly in front of her chest. The composition places her centrally within a weathered setting featuring textured, dark green wooden doors and a rough concrete wall to the right. In the upper left background, a large, circular studio light ring glows with a warm, ambient golden luminosity, functioning as a halo-like visual anchor that contrasts with the dark, moody environment. The overall atmosphere is intimate and authoritative, symbolizing a legendary artist standing alongside the essential tools of her historic craft.
