I was working in a record shop on that day, and my mate phoned to tell me we'd signed him! I couldn't believe it - it came completely out of the blue. Great player, lovely bloke.

I think this might be my go-to feelgood film for years to come. Pretty much my entire life as a Boro fan wrapped up in ear-to-ear grins. It was a wonderful day, and Jan-Aage Fjortoft is clearly an absolute gem of a man. www.youtube.com/watch?v=OToH...

This is the most remarkable story Ray Bradbury ever shared with me. He told it to me late one night, sitting in his den of antiquities and mementos. Take five minutes to read this. It’s pure magic. #Writing #Living #Creativity #RayBradbury #BookSky

He was still playing in the Northern Premier League for Anstey Nomads last season. I think he might have played against Hartlepool in the FA Trophy. He's younger than Ronaldo!

Always loved the sheer oddness of That's Life. I interviewed Esther Rantzen a couple of years ago, along with pretty much everyone else involved in the 1984 Lirpa Loof hoax, and she was very funny - and clearly very proud of the mischief they'd all unleashed. hauntedgeneration.co.uk/2024/09/03/o...

All the Esther Rantzen talk has reminded me of the very first "That's Life!" from 1973, thankfully still on YouTube after being uploaded there a while back. BBC Four could show an early That's Life as a tribute; a fascinating historical time capsule in its own way www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NQh...

Bizarre things that happened in your assembly: the story of Jonah and the Whale was re-enacted, with two enormous blue gym mats used to represent the whale's chomping mouth, both operated by a visibly wilting Andrew Booton. My friend Paul Frank and I played "muggers".

Rumours had circled all day about dozens of planes being unaccounted for in the UK. I remember sitting at the match in a completely hushed atmosphere, and I wasn't the only one who kept nervously glancing to the skies.

I was in the Fly Me To The Moon office with Robert Nichols when Rob's dad phoned with the news. Oddly, there was a Boro home match that night and we all went - a league cup tie against Northampton. A tiny crowd of 3,900 and the strangest atmosphere I can ever remember at a football match.
