disagree. it's a natural consequence of liberal ideas of self-government "power to the people" requires a "people" to give "power" to. but there's no ethnic or racial requirement implied there. democracy implies a demos there's a reason hobsbaum's textbook on the subject starts at 1789

syed is talking bollocks of course there is an argument neoliberalism ended in 2008. the era is now "platform capitalism", where the most powerful organisations are those which provide critical dependencies for others (e.g. finance, cloud providers, social media) and so become "too big to fail"

Wrote a thing Monday. Got held back and is a weekend read at the Guardian today. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
While the criminal justice system should address reports of rape, we know that rates of conviction are appallingly low for a number of reasons. Although, thanks to feminist interventions, the legal system is better equipped to understand this crime and less prejudiced against victims, we will not change the world through that means.

After rape allegations at Cornell University, why are women again being urged to talk to their sons? Why not men?

Sexual assault arises in part through both the entitlement and the desire to abuse and dehumanize women, which is in part about definitions of both masculinity and femininity: masculinity in that domination, violation and degradation are seen as status-enhancing, femininity in the perception that women’s bodies are for men to use, women’s voices and rights to be ignored.

The most compelling thing I’ve read in response to the Cornell case is in an essay by feminist writer Soraya Chemaly. She cites anthropologist Peggy Sanday, who told her that there are “rape-prone” and “rape-free” societies: “She found that in rape-free cultures, women have far more authority, status, safety and freedom.”

They’re societies in which women’s rights to bodily and social self-determination are respected, and a man who violates those rights would face severe consequences. “Rape-prone cultures, on the other hand, treat rape as an entitlement in a system that revolves around masculine contests and hierarchies.”

cynically, AV was the electoral system that would most boost the chances of the lib dems at the time. and just as cynically, SV would keep labour together and with a shot at power

anthropomorphism is fairly well-established within the field. e.g. this passage from what used to be the introductory computer science course of MIT it's fairly tongue-in-cheek here... but there is a reason this metaphor is so available to the authors
We are about to study the idea of a computational process. Computational processes are abstract beings that inhabit computers. As they evolve, processes manipulate other abstract things called data. The evolution of a process is directed by a pattern of rules called a program. People create programs to direct processes. In effect, we conjure the spirits of the computer with our spells.

A computational process is indeed much like a sorcerer's idea of a spirit. It cannot be seen or touched. It is not composed of matter at all. However, it is very real. It can perform intellectual work. It can answer questions. It can affect the world by disbursing money at a bank or by controlling a robot arm in a factory. The programs we use to conjure processes are like a sorcerer's spells. They are carefully composed from symbolic expressions in arcane and esoteric programming languages that prescribe the tasks we want our processes to perform.

A computational process, in a correctly working computer, executes programs precisely and accurately. Thus, like the sorcerer's apprentice, novice programmers must learn to understand and to anticipate the consequences of their conjuring. Even small errors (usually called bugs or glitches) in programs can have complex and unanticipated consequences.

pre-2017, the centrist position was "don't be silly, left wing things are impossible" now, the centrist position is "of course i'm left wing too, but we have to do things properly" owen smith, starmer and now burnham, all with the same strategy

i would say that a consequence of pr is that the labour/tory parties drop their broad appeal... but that seems to have already happened we seem to have moved to a pr party system and electorate without a pr electoral system. which will mean even more chaotic illegitimate governments
