Not a collector. A librarian. This new post on the distinction that changed how I think about everything on my shelf was inspired by the latest episode of the @boardgamehottakes.bsky.social podcast. #boardgames

Listening to the new episode of @boardgamehottakes.bsky.social, very interesting topic about being a #boardgame collector or not. I don’t consider myself a collector: don’t care about pristine boxes, and having all the hotness. I don’t refer to my board games as a collection but as a library.

100%. Also save money. Also less environmental impact. Like cars and houses, preowned is the way to go with board games.

Got to play Misfit Heroes by @alderaceg.bsky.social and Phil Walker-Harding last night. A sweet little hidden gem tableau builder where every sleeve consists of 2 transparent cards that make up a mixed-mythical being with unique abilities and costs. Very cute and very fun.

Good art and graphic design isn’t optional. Very rarely games are still solid when they fail in this aspect but much more often games will end up in the discount bin of history if they aren’t a complete package or lack the graphic design to be usable.

Revisited Hyperborea after about 7 years. Still really fun. The design feels a tad out of date and the iconography took a bit to muddle through but hope to get back to it again sooner so I don’t have to relearn the language.

Ostia was the best use of mancala as a mechanism that I’ve had a chance to play so far. The combination of resource production and action selection on the mancala is a very tricky puzzle. Very thinky game with a fairly light ruleset.
