It’s so fun to pick the brain of a math person. They will say things like “oh poetry is the same as math” and you won’t know what in the hell they’re talking about but you also immediately know it’s because they just see the world completely different than you

My heart breaks for mathematicians whose lives and careers are being destroyed by AI — and especially this PhD student, who doesn’t even know he is a poet
Kai Shaikh, a Ph.D. student in mathematics at the University of Toronto, also currently at SLMath, observed that theorems are easy to use as benchmarks, but that they capture little of the wonderment at the heart of math. "Just like a photograph of a mile marker can't provide much of the value of actually going on a hike," he said,
"it would seem to me that proofs without stories, or even stories without struggle or mystery, and first glimpses of strange beasts, are not very meaningful or valuable to us humans."

I am entirely serious when I say that this should be seen as a moderate position. It specifically and surgically dismantles institutions that did not exist pre-9/11 and assigns their functions much as they were assigned pre-9/11.

It’s very simple. I do not care how transformative AI can be in other areas so long as it is repeatedly being used to generate CSAM

It pains me to say it as someone who generally believes the prison system is awful and should be significantly reduced, but it’s either this or it will end in mass violence

We will not return to a functional country without hauling hundreds if not thousands of DOGE, DHS, ICE, and DoD workers into jail. On top of the actual members of trumps administration

Everyone, from Elon down to the unpaid intern, who was a part of DOGE needs to be convicted and spend SIGNIFICANT time in jail

I consider it a core American value to be able to look a sitting house representative or senator in the eye and tell them they’re a fucking asshole. On par with apple pie

It is still a very uneven exchange that for insider information leading to massive increases in wealth, unfettered access to press outlets, and general name recognition you have to deal with random members of the public calling you an asshole four times a year. And yet most don’t even do that!

I will always maintain that members of congress should be required to talk to constituents in person multiple times each year so that they actually have to defend the bullshit they vote on and promote

“We know that DHS was intentionally established with an overbroad mission and unchecked power. The last two years have made it visible what so many communities have actually been saying for decades: That DHS, frankly, is the single greatest threat to our public safety today,” Ramirez said.

And for those who are not academics: heaving a pile of papers that haven’t gone through peer review and going “here, you sort this out for us and prove us wrong” isn’t scholarship. It’s a hurricane shitting on an earthquake and demanding the professionals come clean it up.

sure but the burden of proof is on the people suggesting the inanimate digital object is conscious, not those suggesting it very likely isn't

I reanalyzed the CDC data behind the LGB “free fall” headline. It rests on a change in bisexual identification among one grade, in one wave, of one survey. Gay or lesbian identification did not change significantly. Calling it a "free fall" is sensational and just gives bad actors talking points.
Six small line charts showing the percent of U.S. high school students choosing each sexual identity response option by grade (9th to 12th), 2015 to 2025, with 95% confidence intervals. Heterosexual falls from about 85 to 90 percent before 2021 to about 73 percent in 2021 and 2023, then rises to about 78 to 80 percent in 2025. Gay or lesbian stays between about 2 and 5 percent throughout. Bisexual rises to about 12 percent in 2021 in every grade, then among 9th graders falls to about 7 percent in 2025, its 2019 level, while other grades stay near 10 percent. “Some other way,” added in 2021, falls from about 4 percent to about 2.5 percent. “Not sure” stays near 3 to 5 percent. A dotted line marks 2021, when CDC changed the response options.

will it balance uni budgets to remove the excess at the top? not really. the issue is a lack of government funding. but if we are resorting to austerity measures, there is a clear gap between expenses and production at the top that is often ignored
