Just reminded me that holding the jump button meant he would immediately jump again the second he touched the ground so if you weren't paying attention you'd throw yourself to your death during a tricky platforming section

I think people today would still rather play a game that looks and feels like it was originally done on graph paper and then programmed in BASIC

Bizarre. Nobody with nostalgia goggles for fucking DIZZY is thinking, "do you know what, I really want an all-singing, all-dancing fully realised 3D dizzy game with all of the beautiful shader effects they hadn't even heard of in 1987 and I have to wait 10 minutes for them to compile every time".

When I was in Jersey City a few weeks ago there were so many geese just standing in a garden that I thought it was some weird American thing, like "we decided to have a goose garden"

I went vegetarian so now all my sausage roll options are down to the Gregg's ones which taste better than they look at least. The Cottonrake coffee is good at least. I had an espresso there that was strong enough to give me visual artefacting

Name a movie that had enough of an emotional response on you that you'll unthinkingly share this post without realizing it's engagement bait.

I enjoyed the very Roald Dahl aspects of Aunt Gladys as well, very much capturing that sort of "irrational extreme terror" that is essential to the magic of childhood

If you ever expand on this I'd love to hear more. I found a lot of it just felt like the director had an instinct to do something that was probably correct and interesting, but there was no follow-through on it. Lots of ideas that just floated around. I enjoyed Barbarian a lot so I was disappointed!

Angeline Era ($19.99) - bumpslash combat with seemingly endless discoveries to make, attached to a story driven by a blend of Irish myth, Christian philosophy, and Japanese-American history. one of 2025's very best - twists around your heart and squeezes hard. store.steampowered.com/app/2393920/...

(it kind of makes me think of Panzer Dragoon Saga where the 3D stages were designed to meld into the skybox, so the horizon lines of the 3D world were pretty carefully matched up to the same ones in the 2D box around it)

Blythe @bly.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
I dunno I think the aesthetic is pretty striking, and the attempt to (AI-assisted or not) turn it into something viable in 3D is interesting, since you'd have to be seamlessly moving from painterly backgrounds to 3D objects in a way that you don't usually see

was joking like gta vi goty??? it wont even be the best game that week!! but then got curious so went to the tapes to look at how true that has been for the older games. if you're curious it's gta iv where everyone starts releasing fucking nothing on rockstar day

I mean the aesthetic is pure 2025 "Midjourney, make me a retro game", so I guess it depends on where you want to draw the line

Blythe @bly.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
I thought it looked familiar. It's basically that AI generated game clip that went viral a hundred years ago/last year

I'd also be curious to hear more about what worked in Weapons for you, because I had the opposite issue with that to RE (struggled with most of it, thought the ending was great).
110
Blythe @bly.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
It's definitely one of the most easily available interpretations because it's based on the last 20 minutes of the film and ties all of its issues together neatly. I definitely prefer Chloe's though because it pulls in all of the rest of the film

Blythe @bly.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
This generally feels more nostalgic than scary to me 🥹
040
Blythe @bly.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
That said I definitely enjoy your interpretation more than my immediate one, which was along the lines of "this is a movie about the tragic note you find that explains the appearance of the mini boss you just killed"

Blythe @bly.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
To me it comes across as a variant on the Marvel "well you have to have seen these three TV shows and ten movies to actually tell if this movie is good or not" situation. If the ending can only be made satisfying by pointing to something completely outside of the movie... bad movie to me
210
Blythe @bly.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
That's definitely one way of looking at it, but for me every time you have to think "ah yes this is actually a clever reference to the games" is a detraction from the work as a whole rather than an increase in depth

An enormous Hatzegopteryx pterosaur stands in the rain on all fours, its head a mass of turkey-like wrinkles around a wicked, machete-shaped beak. It turns a cold, considering eye on you. Two others approach through the mist. Art by Stieven Van Der Poorten for HOW TO SURVIVE PREHISTORY

I think I had a similar problem with Weapons where there would just be stuff thrown in there and I'd be like "what is this for" (all that Rashomon shit!) but I did think that one stuck the landing.

I liked that it was more interested in being good in itself than aping its forbears. No sly nods to iconic scenes from the games. No heavy-handed trivia. No cameos. So interpreting the ending as a kind of joke about the games seems incorrect.
110
Blythe @bly.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
My immediate thought was that the whole thing turned out to be a kind of smug reference to some of the games' mechanics but I am not sure it was that, since the rest of the film didn't rely on the games to justify itself, it seems stupid that the ending would.

Blythe @bly.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Feel like the Resident Evil movie went from overall "quite good actually" to just "ok" in the last five minutes, an ending so "meh" it retroactively lowered my enjoyment of the rest of the movie
