Listen, I want people to be paid a fair wage but also the rates that hotels charge you to rent a projector and a screen for a day are OUTRAGEOUS

Today SABR launched an incredible new book and companion website on Baseball at Manzanar: How We Played the Game, 1942-1945. It’s the story of 120,000 Japanese Americans who were removed from their homes after Pearl Harbor and forced to live at remote incarceration camps: sabr.org/baseball-at-...

The image is of a four panel comic.
The first panel shows Sarah, the protagonist, holding a red ball labeled "A SILLY MEME".
The second panel shows Sarah taking the ball and going through a door labeled "GROUP CHAT".
The third panel shows a group of women sitting together and consoling one woman in the center. The woman in the center is saying "...And that's how it happened. It's been the worst day of my life."
The fourth panel shows Sarah standing in the doorway behind them awkwardly holding the red ball.

My Rage Against the Machine/Les Mis mashup is complete. This is my interpretation of the quilt guild’s summer challenge “quilt with your interpretation and/or feelings towards our current ‘democracy’” all hand stitched.
Quilt hanging on a card catalog. Neutral background with navy cursive appliqué “Do you hear thr people sing?” The background is embroidered in red starting light and getting bolder the lyrics to “killing in the name” the quilting effect is a focused sunburst from the center.

The first thing that comes to mind is the washing machine - doing laundry by hand took DAYS. But there is a trend in history where when the tools make the work easier, the expectations for the amount of work go up.

Last night we went to see Star Trek IV at Alamo Drafthouse and the pre-show included a commercial for the Star Trek Encyclopedia, which I still have on my shelf.

I saw a lot of dogs at the Labor Day parade today, which led me to this joke: if the working dogs unionized, they would have a collective barkaning agreement

The most absolutely massive flex from the state fair exhibit. This quilt is made of 40 years of prize ribbons from various categories at the New Mexico State Fair won by Carol St. Clair Johnson. She also won a prize for this quilt.

satin ribbons

After unexpectedly winning her first blue ribbon for a sewn cape in 1981, Carol St. Clair Johnson developed an enduring love for the New Mexico State Fair. The quilt Fair New Mexico-41 Fair Years incorporates more than six hundred of the ribbons she won at the fair every subsequent year except 2020 (when the fair was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Johnson earned ribbons for needlework, knitting, crochet, pies, cookies, cakes, canning, jewelry, flowers, vegetables, and potted plants. The title of the quilt is a reference to the state song, and the design places the state's Zia sun symbol at the center. The quilt earned Johnson yet another ribbon: Best in Category (miscellaneous quilt) at the 2023 New Mexico State Fair.

Since we are talking about accents/dialects, I think one challenge I have with those quizzes sometimes is that if I see the word written out I will say "of course those are different" and I have to say them over and over. And possibly I say things differntly when reading aloud than when speaking

I think the most successful plant in our yard is the goldenrod - we planted a couple a couple of years ago. It has spread, and while it isn't blooming yet, it is currently as tall as I am (5'8")

Just re-organized some recently moved bookshelves, please enjoy this shelf i call the Trojan War Expanded Universe
A dark wood bookshelf on it are copies of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, The Oresteia, collected plays by Euripides and Sophocles, and the Aeniad. Most are leather bound; there are multiple translations of the Homer and the Virgil

I think the thing about Dolly that we all respond to is that she knew her own worth, but she didn't think she was better than anyone (at least not publicly). She believed us all, herself included, to be beloved children of her God and she acted accordingly.

Hello friends - I would like some recommendations for a good multi-season show that I can use as background viewing for data entry or similar tasks. Ideally it would be in English and have minimal on-screen text that I need to read. I have most of the streaming services and I work from home.

Taste is subjective and some of the AI slop out there is BAD but not REPULSIVE so I get why people go "meh, good enough" but then sometimes you see something that goes viral and you think "did they people who published this even LOOK at it" because what the actual fuck

Flight has been delayed past when I should have landed at my destination. (It's a short flight) We have been directed to a new gate three different times and are now back at the original gate. Travel is so glamorous.

Because I love myself, when I booked my flight for today (work trip), I booked a 1:30 departure, meaning a normal morning and an 11:30 pick-up at home. Unfortunately, I have been up since 6 AM because T has jury duty and I couldn't fall back asleep after his alarm (we normally get up at 8)

She challenged the conventional view that a majority of head and neck cancers resulted from cigarette smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.

I have been the note-taker in so many meetings where the decision got made during the conversation, and often CHANGED during the discussion. An AI summary of a transcript would not capture that.

We went tubing along the Shenandoah today and while I don't love the thing where people bring speakers it was fun to pass different flotillas of people playing different music (and they were far enough apart that it wasn't cacophonous).

There are multiple rooms, so - in my office, mostly by genre and then alpha by author. History is generally chronological. The books in the main living room are mostly SFF and then alpha by author and in series order as appropriate, but hardcovers and paperbacks separated
