I miss the projector, but not its weight! 139 pounds hanging like a Sword of Damocles above my sofa, in year 1999. I did use six 400lb concrete anchors, so I had over a 10:1 safety margin. Two of us even swang a rope under the mount to stress test it first! 👽

True Multisync, up to 135 KHz scan rate. Yes I had 1080p in 1999! Even self-ISF-calibrated. Convergence, astig, keystone, bow, the kit and caboodle. Took hours to get 720p pixel perfect, 1080p usable. Practically I used 1440x810. I could run 800x600 at 100 Hz, so I loved that refresh rate.

Eventually I ran CRT 3D shutter glasses on an ASUS AGP V7700 Deluxe, a GeForce 2 GTS card running Star Wars Episode 1 Racer in full 3D glory (albiet at an eye searing 30Hz/30Hz per eye). Pod racing 600 miles per hour, 4 feet above ground, on a 92 inch screen, 25 years ago.

My unit was NEC rather than Sony. Here's Windows 98 running on it, all 92 inches of 16:9 widescreen. Before year 2000. Yes it was CRT. Projected from three 8" CRTs from inside my NEC XG135 CRT graphics projector (>12K MSRP, got used at 5.7K as B-Stock from AVSCIENCE) Blown up to 92". HD. Zero blur.

When I was barely out of my teenage years -- I used to have a three-CRT projector. Some of these Sony big-box rear projection had three tiny 7 inch CRTs blowing up to 61 inches. But some were DLPs. Me way back in year 1999:

And here's the iPhone 14 Plus .mov video, proving handwave pursuits can be as good as rails (sometimes) thanks to optical stabilization and no rail vibrations. Cherrypicking 1000-frame brute video for the win!

I captured a 480Hz OLED with a mere handwave iPhone 14 Plus, as perfectly as a rail. I used video recording (brute burstshoot) and screengrabbed the best:

Other reviewers use professional rails (etc), but handwave phone camera works well in lot of situations. What I'm thinking is modifying the shadertoy to include a pursuit camera sync track shader, especially the one with the splitscreen. This as additional footage in addition to highspeed camera

Here's a freezeframe from that video; The motion test URL for this is testufo.com/ghosting#sep... It's lots of fun recording video while handwaving it; best to use 3rd party camera app that lets you config exposure to roughly 4 refresh cycle exposure (1/120sec) per video frame (for 480Hz)

Here's "out in field" video of a smartphone handwave pursuit camera on on a prototype 480Hz OLED one year ago. While this was not running CRT simulator, you can see that the video stays very clear despite me waving camera sideways along the UFOs:

Blur Busters @blurbusters.com · 24/01/2025
High speed video is good too. But, additionally, one can also use long exposures + pursuit camera method. I can add a pursuit camera sync track to the splitscreen version of the shadertoy CRT beam simulator;

Instructions for Mac users of TestUFO with stutters. There's a new "High Power + High Precision" mode for MacBooks, via gear icon. Many TestUFO animations run as little as 0.1ms-0.2ms but stutters at 120fps 120Hz due to Mac power management. This very XCKD setting (#1172) fixes TestUFO stutters.

Need 4x framerate to bust 75% of display motion blur. But, we play both blur busting games: - Framerate based blur busting (flickerless) - Strobe/BFI based blur busting (flicker based) That's why we released our CRT simulation GPU shader too on github under MIT license, which is superior to BFI.

Point is: We need framegen, and we need it to improve. Laglessly & artifactlessly. Don't base your "refresh rate jadedness" on LCD Hz incrementalism. Wake up & demo 480Hz OLED, game software devs & open your eyes. LCD put us in upgradefeel stagnation. blurbusters.com/120vs480 for deets.

CRT simulator GPU shader coming December 24, 2024 on github & shadertoy! Genesis of CRT-simulation replacements in future, when used CRT tubes are near-extinct. Tomorrow's 240Hz, 480Hz & 1000Hz OLEDs can optionally faithfully simulate CRT electron beam for 60fps content.

Screens look different with stationary vs moving eyes. 1. Moving eyes creates motion blur from persistence, via eye tracking of screen motion (moving objects / pans / scrolls) 2. Stationary eyes means screen motion exhibit stroboscopic stepping stepping effects. This effect is not affected by GtG.

A well-tweaked XG2431 (with Large Vertical Total) actually manages to have less motion blur than some old CRT tubes, although at cost of brightness. Or OLED 480fps 480Hz is only 2ms MPRT, less than plasma persistence (~3ms) and close to CRT tube. Amazing! Video via iPhone pursuit cam handwave:

I'm already getting CRT motion clarity on my flat monitors. You do have to cherrypick. 1. Extremely good strobe backlight with unlocked Hz range (60-240Hz) and low crosstalk (at 60-120Hz) + tweaks. 2. Or ultra-high-Hz OLED such as a 360Hz or 480Hz OLED. I get CRT clarity scrolling on them!

Mark Rejhon also teaches training classrooms in the (display/graphics + time) domain. He also upgrades TestUFO HDR at beta.testufo.com Many engineers & software devs are unfamiliar with display sciences. It helps them understand better while programming software / games / display firmwares. /11
