I haven't received this email, but: (1) a book previously listed as part of the settlement has flat out disappeared and (2) although I have a PDF of the corrections which were entered for me (via long phone call) none of them appear on the website.

Success! I spoke to a person in the Anthropic Settlement Ops office and they corrected the allocations for me. I emailed the supporting documents and I think I'm good. Also, the person I spoke to was genuinely helpful - made the process much easier than I'd feared.

(Should add this isn’t necessarily a recommendation. Marsh is homophobic even for her time.)

Not yet. I emailed again yesterday. I also called them and was told I needed to talk to someone in Settlement Ops and that they would call me back. Which they haven't. I'll try again this afternoon.

There's Ngaio Marsh's Singing in the Shrouds, where a serial killer ("the Flower Killer") strews the bodies of his victims with flowers and beads from broken necklaces. Dates from 1959.

Yeah. Not my favorite thing. (Though I have seen people saying that the Settlement people have been helpful, and I am clinging to that.)

So sorry to hear this! FWIW, I also emailed the settlement administrator about a weird problem and did get a "we got your email, did you check the FAQ" response. I'm going to mail again tomorrow, and then try the phone number.

Oh, I'm pissed off enough about this that I WILL pursue it to the bitter end. :-) And, to be clear, I'm pretty sure that the Baen and Tor claims were made in error. But I want Anthropic to pay every penny they owe. Also - I appreciate the support! We're all in such a weird place right now.

Melissa Scott @blueterraplane.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
A total mess. I spent yesterday and this morning collecting supporting material, writing explanatory notes, and uploading everything, only to have the site tell me an error occurred and to try again later. It's too early to drink, but I'm considering it. And my situation wasn't even that weird!

Melissa Scott @blueterraplane.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
Aaaand the Anthropic website won't accept my corrections. Anyone else having this problem?
111
Melissa Scott @blueterraplane.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
Does anyone know of someone at Baen and/or Tor who is handling the Anthropic claims for them? They've both claimed books of mine on which the rights reverted 30 years ago. (It's pretty obviously a mistake, but it would be easier if they'd help fix it.)

If you're wondering why authors are getting so rabid here: First Anthropic stole our books. Then we got denied compensation because of US unjust copyright law and publishers failing to meet their contractual obligations. Then publishers and agents apparently claimed author shares. Now this.

Considering that I once received a reversion notice that said (more or less) "yeah, ok, whatever" scrawled across the bottom of my then-agent's request letter, I wouldn't bet on it.

Periodic reminder that The Map and the Territory exists, and you can read it! It's a post-apocalyptic picaresque about an ace cartographer and a gay wizard trying to get home in a shattered world haunted by a death goddess. Includes: Airships! Crocodiles! Magic mirrors! Microscopes! Wizard duels!
The cover of the book The Map and the Territory, which depicts two people standing back to back. One of them is a tall Black man in elaborate wizardly robes, and the other is a short woman with brown skin who wears practical clothes for adventuring.

Colourful Roman glass cups decorated with animals from the Roman arena. Made in the AD 200s in Roman glass workshops in the Rhineland, they were found in ‘princely’ graves in Denmark, giving us a glimpse of how far Roman luxury goods travelled. National Museum of Denmark 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo collage shows four images of Roman short clear-glass cups painted with colourful enamel decoration depicting animals from the Roman Arena. Known as 'circus beakers', fourteen have been found in richly-furnished 'princely' graves in Denmark. The cups are dated AD 200s and were made in Roman glass workshops on the Rhine.

The top two images show two sides of the same cup

Top left: cup painted with a honey-coloured brown lion with shaggy mane viewed in profile facing right, its front and rear legs outstretched as if running at full speed

Top right: a bright green leopard with black spots viewed in profile facing left. It has a long curling tail. It’s front and rear legs are outstretched as if running. Out of shot, there is a blue goat which is being hunted down by the lion and the leopard

Bottom left: a fragmentary glass cup decorated with a light-brown lion with shaggy mane with black nose and a pink tongue

Bottom right: a standing gladiator with knee-length green leggings, cropped tunic top, and holding a blue shield, faces right towards a large brown bear seen in profile, The bear also faces right, as if moving away from the gladiator

Timeless humour! A 2,000 year-old Roman souvenir pen with a joke inscription roughly equivalent to: “I went to Rome and all I got you was this cheap pen!" 😂 Dated circa 70 AD, this iron stylus pen was recovered in London during excavations by MOLA. 📷 Juan Jose Fuldain/MOLA #Archaeology
The photo by Juan Jose Fuldain for MOLA shows four images of the same Roman iron stylus (pen) one below the other, with knib to the left. The stylus is octagonal in shape, with a dot-punched inscription along its length on four alternate sides. The stylus is 132 mm long and 5 mm thick, and the letters are circa 2 mm high. The four images of the pen show the four lines of inscribed text (highlighted) which read:

'ab urbe v[e]n[i] munus tibi gratum adf (e)ro acul[eat]um ut habe[a]s memor[ia]m nostra(m)
rogo si fortuna darlelt quo possem
largius ut longa via ceu sacculus est (v)acuus'

Translated as

I have come from the City. I bring you a welcome gift with a sharp point that you may remember me.
I ask, if fortune allowed, that I might be able (to give) as generously as the way is long (and) as my purse is empty.'

This inscription is generally interpreted by scholars as a humorous, tongue-in-cheek acknowledgment by the giver of the cheapness of the gift.
