As a Christian, we should lean toward mercy not retribution. In modern times, there’s seemingly little concrete other than emotion. So much for not casting the first stone. Jesus submitted to execution, but that doesn’t mean he approves it. Human justice has executed innocent people to many times.

Federal and academic research generally indicates the death penalty has no meaningful impact on future homicides, ie deterance value. BUT really, how can one measure this? Potential murders won’t likely respond truthfully to survey. Generally, violence is historically down with less executions.

He might “deserve” death, but is it necessary? What ongoing danger does he present? It’s retribution but likely won’t change the minds of Jihadists or anyone desiring their death. If anything, it gives the Jihadist what he or she wants - a martyrdom, perhaps in some cases extra money for family.

In my experience, they tend to ignore the many passages in the Jewish scriptures calling for mercy or allowing for sanctuary. They tend to ignore calls for forgiveness, mercy and grace in the New Testament They tend to make scriptures conform to their arguments.

That’s a ghastly throwback to the past, but his denomination led by Doug Wilson argues for theonomy, Christian Nationalist take where civil and judicial laws given to ancient Israel in the Jewish scriptures remain binding on modern nations and should form the foundation of civil law. No surprises.
