After HGP, Sydney Brenner famously said "When all this genome mania dies down, we'll get back to hypothesis-driven normal science". But everything went "omics". This article considers how long it will take for Brenner to ultimately be proven correct . elifesciences.org/articles/112...

A much needed data driven analysis in the whole "not using the SAT for UC admissions" brouhaha. Note some UCs are sufficiently non-selective to not be informative in the analysis. Yet those faculty still complain how not using the SAT underlies the perceived shortcomings in their students.

"All the while he loved the People just as much as he feared and detested Persons, and he planned to do something historic. Certainly! He would give each family that five thousand dollars a year just as soon now as he could arrange it". [Sinclair Lewis - It Can't Happen Here]
Screenshot from IT CAN'T HAPPEN HERE by Sinclair Lewis, a novel set in a fictionalized version of the 1930s United States, it follows an American politician, Berzelius "Buzz" Windrip, who quickly rises to power to become the country's first outright dictator (in allusion to Adolf Hitler's rise to power in Nazi Germany)]

P411
the duties of despotism along with his shoes and his fine new coat. He no longer went out racketing. His cabinet begged him not to clown in barrooms and lodge entertain-ments; it was not dignified, and it was dangerous to be too near to strangers.

So he played poker with his bodyguard, late at night, and at such times drank too much, and he cursed them and glared with bulging eyes whenever he lost, which, for all the good-will of his guards about letting him win, had to be often, because he pinched their salaries badly and locked up the spoons. He had become as unbouncing and unbuzz-ing a Buzz as might be, and he did not know it.

All the while he loved the People just as much as he feared and detested Persons, and he planned to do some-thing historic. Certainly! He would give each family that five thousand dollars a year just as soon now as he could arrange it.

Done framing before but never built a pony wall. Built one to define a space in a detached garage my son is turning into a game room. Even with the two corners had some wiggle. Used scraps from the former owners wood pile to add diagonal and horizontal bracing. Now its bomber. Fun build.

Cellular biologist Marilyn Farquhar discovered critical structural components of cells, including tight junctions & desmosomes. A pioneer in electron microscopy, she served as the first female president of the American Society for Cell Biology, 1981-82. She was born #OTD in 1928. #WomenInSTEM
A black-and-white photograph of cellular biologist and pathologist Dr. Marilyn Gist Farquhar (July 11, 1928 – January 16, 2019) at work in a laboratory setting. Seated at a desk, she rests her chin thoughtfully on her left fist while her right hand holds a pen over an open three-ring binder notebook. She wears a crisp white laboratory coat over a dark-and-white patterned, checkered shirt with matching cuffs. Her expression is warm, serene, and intellectually engaged, looking directly toward the camera with a gentle smile. Her short, dark hair is softly styled back. To her right sits a large, vintage electron microscope with its textured metallic columns, representing the primary tool of her monumental discoveries regarding cellular tight junctions, the Golgi apparatus, and renal pathology. The high-contrast composition frames her closely, creating an intimate, focused, and historically significant mood that celebrates her legacy as the first female president of the American Society for Cell Biology.

A good thread. I'd add at most places a uniform faculty workload is more akin to a theoretical concept. You can buy your way out of teaching and so forth. And that stratification of contribution, rightly or wrongly, shapes public perception of faculty caring and effort. That's part of the myth.

You must devise a workable plan for a door. Then you must build the door. The hardest part is actually walking through the door. You must then confront what lies on the other side of the door. The door only works for you, but, if you can avoid it, do not close it behind you.

The fiscal pressures of keeping the lights on at universities have led to a long-term, increasing mission schism between faculty and admin. This is a dramatic example; across the country there are many others, often subtle. It's why unis have been easy to roll. Fixing that will not be easy.
