Your regular reminder: If the Russians stop fighting, the war ends. If the Ukrainians stop fighting, their land will be occupied, their leaders will be killed, their history and language will be erased, their children will be kidnapped to serve Russia.

Over four weeks this summer, at least three men murdered their families. Together, the three men killed 17 people, 12 of them children. And within a day or two, each story had vanished from the national news. 1/2
A Mighty Girl

Over four weeks this summer, at least three men murdered their families, killing 12 children among them.

On July 24, in Michigan, Kristopher Karolkiewicz shot his wife and their six children and set the house on fire.

On July 31, in Wisconsin, Jeffrey Manke killed his two daughters, 11 and 16.

On August 23, in Montana, Alan Smith gunned down eight of his relatives -- his parents, his grandmother, his sister, and four children -- at a Sunday dinner.

Together, the three men killed 17 people, 12 of them children. And within a day or two, each story had vanished from the national news.

Compare this to the coverage of the Lindsay Clancy case. For weeks, the trial of the Massachusetts mother, who killed her three children in 2023, has been a media fixation.

Cable networks have carried it live. CNN, NBC, the Boston Globe, and others have run day-by-day live blogs. Reporters have packed the courthouse by the dozen, some sitting on the floor for lack of room. And the trial is only the latest chapter: the case has been dissected in the national press and on true-crime podcasts for years.

A mother killing her children becomes a national obsession; a father doing the same quickly becomes yesterday's news. The obvious explanation for the discrepancy is timing: Clancy is on trial, while these three men killed themselves and left no one to prosecute.

But it doesn't hold up. Men who murder their families do stand trial -- and their cases almost never command this kind of sustained, wall-to-wall attention.

The true-crime sagas that grip the nation for years overwhelmingly feature women who kill. The gender of the killer, it turns out, matters more than the crime.

The numbers tell a different story than the headlines. Family annihilation in America is neither rare nor evenly distributed.

According to a 2023 investigation by the Indianapolis Star, drawing on data from the Gun Violence Archive, someone in this country murders their own family roughly once every five days.

And the people who do it are almost always men -- by expert estimates, some 91 percent of the time. A gun is used in about nine of ten cases. The victims, disproportionately, are children.

The silence has a dangerous cost. Violence by men has become so normalized that even its most extreme form -- a man murdering his own family -- barely registers. And that silence compounds itself: because these killings rarely break through the noise, most people have no idea how common they are, or how overwhelmingly they are committed by men. The pattern disappears into the background, one fleeting headline at a time.None of this diminishes the horror of a mother who kills. It only raises the question: why does that horror seize our full attention, while the far more common version -- committed by fathers, husbands, sons -- slips past us in a day?

Hanging? We need to call this what it is: LYNCHING. Ten Black Americans in less than two years. Every one of these deaths deserves answers, transparency, and scrutiny. No one should look at these images and expect Black Americans to shrug this off, especially in light of our history.

Dear god. Very, very serious allegations of mass civil rights violations at the State of Florida's Everglades immigration detention center (officially known as "Alligator Alcatraz").
Attorneys representing immigrants held at the “Alligator Alcatraz” detention site alleged Friday in federal court that guards beat and pepper-sprayed detainees after a protest over lost phone access — allegations they argue show state and federal officials defying a recent court order protecting detainees’ civil rights. In a court filing in Fort Myers, lawyers with the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation and civil rights groups said officers at the controversial Everglades facility entered a unit earlier this month and physically assaulted detainees. One man was thrown to the ground and “severely beat,” according to his attorney, who submitted photographs to the court showing her client with a black eye. The attorney, Katie Blankenship of the legal-services organization Sanctuary of the South, wrote in a sworn declaration that officers broke another detainee’s wrist and “pepper sprayed everyone in the cage.” The violence, the attorneys say, erupted after site employees abruptly cut off detainees’ access to phones on April 2 — eliminating what they described as their clients’ only connection to legal counsel and their families. The day-long prohibition came less than a week after Middle District Judge Sheri Polster Chappell issued an order expanding Alligator Alcatraz detainees’ access to their lawyers and their ability to use phones at the remote pop-up facility.

She was granted withholding of removal from India *decades* ago, and had been living and working legally (including for the U.S. government!) ever since. But with third country removals now a real option, TSA shared her data with ICE and they arrested her at the airport on her way to a job.
ast month, Meenu Batra, 53, who has lived in the South Texas border colonia of Laguna Heights since 2002, was on her way to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to work another case. She’s been a court interpreter for over 20 years, the only one licensed in Texas for Hindi, Punjabi, or Urdu. Her language skills are requested nationwide, where she’s contracted to help people making their way through the immigration court system, just as she did for herself 35 years ago when she immigrated from India to New Jersey before settling in Texas.

She planned to meet with her adult children in Austin after the Wisconsin trip, the only difference she foresaw in an otherwise typical trip. Her routine for years included flying from either Harlingen or Brownsville to far-flung parts of the country where South Asian immigrants needed language access. For this trip, the flight was out of Harlingen.

But, around 5 p.m. on March 17, Batra was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents after passing through security at Harlingen International Airport. In a sworn deposition that was filed as part of a petition for habeas corpus—a legal request to be released on the grounds that the detention is unlawful—Batra said the people who arrested her did not have visible badges nor were they wearing uniforms. One of those agents had asked Batra if she knew she was in the country illegally and that she had a deportation order. She replied that her work authorization status, which she applied for regularly after being granted a legal status called withholding of removal by a New Jersey immigration judge decades ago, was good for another four years.

“That doesn’t mean you can be here forever,” the agent replied. Two more plainclothes agents would join the two that detained her, bringing her down the escalator and to the front of the airport.
