The color choice of this material is super interesting. Ashlyn uses beeswax, concrete, and bronze to emulate and contrast human skin and bodily softness. This use of bright red shiny plastic removes it from the body on some level. but what keeps it human? #conartinsitu

This piece is really interesting to me. it looks like a gloopy and melted baby bell cheese wax sculpture. But there's something human about it. #conartinsitu

I took this photo for an artist friend of mine, Ashlyn Bennett. Her works are all about the body, femininity, and autonomy. this work reminded me of one of her recent pieces in the BFA exhibition. #conartinsitu

theres a famous work by Sol Lewitt that are just instructions of certain lines etc to put on a wall. other artists are meant to craft the works using their own judgement (usually the instructions are super vague). that makes me think of this comment! are the pieces still Lewitt's? #conartinsitu

this is such a cool idea! The idea of replicability and production is really insightful. Warhol had a lot of critiques on his work that they were commercial, thats an interesting comment considering this dialogue #conartinsitu

I remember chatting about this piece! and when I got up close I remember thinking about all the hands that went into the making/weaving of this light fixture. #conartinsitu

I totally get this, honestly I think there is a lot of magic in street art for this reason, stumbling upon artwork when youre not seeking it out #conartinsitu

These look like cowboy hats to me! maybe the concept of this painting is to 'look for shapes in the clouds'. #conartinsitu

I like this perspective! it makes me think about photography and how a photo can show texture but still remain flat. but I agree that oil paint almost emulates that depth! #conartinsitu

I really like the glow of this piece, maybe making it less practical for utility purposes, but nonetheless beautiful and capturing an earthly aesthetic. #conartinsitu

The thick glass walls of the piece give it an air of excellent craft, which I think often belongs to 'households' which is how this piece is presented. #conartinsitu

I was attracted to this piece because although it is a light source, labeled as a lamp, it seemed to exist on the floor. #conartinsitu

This piece really reminds me of nature because of the organic growth-like shapes, they almost make me think of mollusks. #conartinsitu

class was cancelled today so I went back through my photos and noticed I forgot to talk about this piece. It is a sculpture and a light source #conartinsitu

11 The design of this is meant to represent hair and braids, but it also feels reminiscent to me of something geographical about it. #ConArtInSitu

10 I really enjoy this work. The stippling effect of this painting is especially textured and prominent. It makes me think of the back of a rug being tufted, or a bunch of pushpins arranged together. #ConArtInSitu

9 @ebaltimore04.bsky.social pointed out to me that some of these paintings are maps. This one is particularly striking. I really appreciate that the water of the lake doesn’t have to be blue and that the surrounding area can be pink and it’s still recognizable what it is. #ConArtInSitu

6 The scale of this work is impressive, but I think even more than that the usage of white line as a tool is so striking. Especially in contrast with the other works, which feel additive? This feels subtractive. #ConArtInSitu

5 I’ve been sitting with this piece for the last 10 minutes and I keep finding new colors, new textures, moments of play and strain. Some of the circles are eyeballs, some are roses, some are cellular. #ConArtInSitu

2 The dotting in these pieces makes me think of pointillism. There’s something extra energetic about them and the texture of the dots. I’m really enjoying these abstractions so far. #ConArtInSitu

To tie back to ‘comedian’, I think there’s something about my piece that differs from this one. My intent for this wall drawing to be both created and destroyed for the purpose of supplementing art viewing versus the existence of the work critiquing and being made prominent by the art space. 16

He asked if I would “install” this work somewhere else if someone did want to buy the piece. I had been so wrapped up coordinating with the gallery about removal procedures and getting it actually on the wall that it didn’t occur to me that it is about to exist in the art world. 14

I’m currently working on a wall drawing for my senior exhibition and one of the gallery assistants asked me how I would sell my wall drawing. I looked back at him and went ‘huh’ because this work only does exist as a function of the space, I hadn’t thought about its permanence in concept. 13

The more specific conversation about ‘Comedian’ specifically does make me think about the temporarily of some contemporary art (almost as an antithesis of archival). I think this work is mean to ‘expire’ physically, but because of that it cannot conceptually perish. 12

Today in #ConArtInSitu we’re chatting about the ‘comedian’ by Maurizio Cattelan and these discussions remind me of talking about Sol Lewitt’ conceptual instructions. The idea of “patenting” a concept regardless of the materiality of the work is an important part of conceptual art IMO. 11

I enjoyed listening to this artist talk about her process of making this and 2 other similar chairs via video. She said that 3 was a good number because any more and they would lose their uniqueness, but any less and she wouldn’t be able to explore the materiality of the work enough. I resonate! 10

^ this structure we’re sitting on (and allowed to sit on YAYAY) is an unconventional seating spot in and of itself. Sitting here and writing about odd chairs feels fitting. 9 #ConArtInSitu

Maybe I’m just hungry but this chair makes me want ice cream… This is another chair with really emotive textures, I wish I could sit and feel the subversion the artist intended. But alas, not all art is meant to for me to sit on it. 7 #ConArtInSitu

^i do wish I could circumambulate this chair, but because of the nature of the display it is on, that’s not allowed. I feel like there has to be many more hidden treasures that I just cannot see. 6 #ConArtInSitu

@ebaltimore04.bsky.social pointed out to me that this chair is made of the objects it depicts and has been wrapped in leather. Seeing it across the room I thought the bands was wood grain or 3d print. I enjoy how deceptive this piece is, I want to keep looking. 5 #ConArtInSitu

These are 2 3D printed chairs. I really much prefer the intricacy of the one on the right, structurally it seems more unique and innovative. The left chair seems mass producible, @egrist.bsky.social commented it could be found at IKEA 3 #ConArtInSitu

This is such an interesting observation! I feel like this is tied to our definition of contemporary art being tied to the present in some way. Does intentionally leaving something unfinished contribute to it feeling contemporary? 18 #ConArtInSitu

Something I am noticing about commenting on the work at the DAM versus the MCA is how the relationships between the works are much more difficult to see/capture. For now, I just chalk this up to the sheer size and capacity of the museum. 14 #ConArtInSitu
