Lindsay Clancy serves as an example of someone who definitely did what she did, but the internet and a couple of the jurors are having a serious debate on whether she was mentally insane or not for doing so. At very least we all agree that she's guilty and needs to be punished for this.

Nope. Hence why the sentence is always stated as “until dead”. Going free if you live through your execution is a legal myth in most areas. If you survive your execution, they get to do it again until it sticks.

She tortured and killed a fellow Job Corps student when she was 18. She cut the girl's throat 6 times and bashed her head in, took a piece of her skull and showed it around the next day. She also tried to kill a fellow inmate.
