Since people are giving Depp v Heard a second look in light of the smear campaign against Blake Lively I feel the need to remind everyone that one of the jurors in Depp v Heard was an actual imposter and nobody cared. That trial was rigged regardless of her evidence.

Like. You can always narrow down the characteristics of the specific type of bi person, or trans person, you happen to be discussing. The question is, why is this a topic of discussion at all

And it’s reminiscent of other similar discourses too. There’s so much talk about trans women who have “just realized they’re trans” and supposedly still act like their assigned gender.

It seems like bi women are imagined as “inexperienced” with queerness by default and all of their imagined failures are attributed to that, so when people don’t wanna sound biphobic they make that inexperience just canon in their heads.

But there’s also the fact that when general biphobia is too obvious, people just make up a bi woman who’s socially situated such that everything biphobic belief about bi women would “sound more reasonable”.

So there’s discourse on tiktok and the topic is “bi women who mostly date men will act like men when they date women”, with the vague idea being that they’re not used to women’s levels of emotional maturity and are too used to always being right so they get too defensive. And I hate it lol.

It’s just so odd to tell trans women who are into men that we’re not marginalized due to our sexuality because according to braindead fag taxonomy we fall under the heterosexual slot.

At best, we’re always treated as newcomers to feminism or opposition to patriarchy, or newcomers to queerness. We’re kindly told we have baggage to unpack and our attraction to men is a bug planted by patriarchy in our brain that we need to work on.

The roads to being reactionary are as diverse as people are. This isn’t me saying “#notall” either. This is me saying that people sometimes characterize proximity to cis(het) men as a site of privilege where it’s more likely to be a site of violence.

There’s this idea that certain types of queer/trans people are feminism made flesh and that’s just incredibly frustrating to me. If your feminism brands a group of people who are very likely to be targets of patriarchal violence “unsafe”, it’s shit feminism, idk what to tell you.

NHS England have launched a survey for adults who are using an NHS England gender clinic or have in the past 5 years. Given recent experiences with consultations, it could be tempting not to engage. But we do we encourage trans adults in England to take part (reasons below). buff.ly/49MvHp1
NHS England Survey on adult gender services: TransActual’s view. NHS England are surveying trans people (and weirdly, their friends and family) about their experiences with NHS adult gender clinics. We encourage trans people to take part. We understand why people will be sceptical but... If we, you, and our friends and family don’t respond, the only people completing the survey will be those campaigning to take our care away. Clarification: bi erasure has been a thing for a very long time. Gay activism has always been largely cis white gays, occasionally cis white lesbians, followed by cis gays OC… Biphobia is something we need to address if we are really giving others their due. (As problematic as the verb «give» is.)

If you want to be an ally to bi+ people, help us by spreading awareness, dismantling biphobic stereotypes, standing up to biphobic "jokes," speaking up when we are erased, and helping us create a less biphobic society so that we can hope to change the general public's view of us someday. 🔚

As Alon Zivony wisely says here, we need therapy more than most, and instead of support we are still getting disparaged, dismissed, and worse misdiagnosed and pathologized. Being bisexual is not a personality disorder, but psychologists still seem to think that it is.⬇️

Because of monosexism bisexual people are more vulnerable to mental health issues than even gay men and lesbians. We need psychotherapists to be on our side. Instead, we get therapists that try to persuade us that we are not really bisexual & that our bisexuality is a problem

This conclusion talks about how bi erasure specifically works to feed these stereotypes that lead to even more harm against bisexual people by these health professionals. If you care about bi people you have to STOP ERASING US. You are actively harming all of us when you do.
SCREENGRAB, part of Summary and Implications: [highlight start] It has previously been
suggested that bisexual stereotypes stem from incorrect assumptions about sexuality and from
gender binarism [highlight end] (Rust, 2002; Zivony & Saguy, 2018). From these assumptions it follows that
being sexually attracted to men and women is akin to being pulled in opposite directions, which
would entail a persistent conflict for bisexual people and result in identity confusion and
romantic turmoil. [highlight start] This “stereotype deduction” account can explain why psychotherapists who are
not familiar with bisexual people and hold no explicit negativity toward bisexual people can still
hold stereotypical beliefs about them: given the low visibility of bisexual people in society in
general (Hayfield, 2020) and in psychology in particular[highlight end] (Barker, 2008; Ebersole et al., 2018),
these psychotherapists might not even know that their beliefs about bisexuality are prejudicial.
It is possible that to reduce bisexual stereotypes, it is crucial to use interventions that also
include multicultural education and dismantle incorrect assumptions about bisexual people in
particular and sexuality in general. Some support for this possibility has been found in studies
that examine prejudice and bisexual stereotype reduction interventions in the general population.

I'd like to make a special note here that this was done to Amber Heard and I'd like to rub that information onto the faces of every person who has ever told me biphobia was not involved and not relevant in that case. It is highly relevant, and continues to be for a lot of bi+ people world-wide.⬇️

"Specifically, previous studies showed that clinicians are predisposed to diagnose bisexual people with a borderline personality disorder (BPD), **independent of presenting psychopathology.**" Read it again. And again. And once more.⬇️
SCREENGRAB, part of Summary and Implications: [highlight start] Our results may also explain disparities in psychiatric diagnosis between bisexual and nonbisexual people. Specifically, previous studies showed that clinicians are predisposed to diagnose
bisexual people with a borderline personality disorder (BPD), independent of presenting
psychopathology[highlight ends] (Eubanks‐Carter & Goldfried, 2006; Rodriguez-Seijas et al., 2021). A possible
reason for this bias is that [highlight starts]bisexual stereotypes correlate with symptoms of BPD, such as identity
diffusion (e.g., Jørgensen, 2006) and sexual promiscuity (e.g., Sansone & Sansone, 2011). This
potential link points to an even more severe consequence of therapists holding stereotypical
beliefs about bisexual clients.[highlight ends]

"These results suggest that like the general public, psychotherapists adhere to stereotypical beliefs about bisexual people." This is so f*ckin disheartening, specially when you consider how many people say biphobia isn't real or it's a non issue. ⬇️
SCREENGRAB, continuation of the abstract of the study: issue. [highlighted portion start] Compared to non-bisexual clients, bisexual clients were evaluated as more likely to suffer from identity and relationship issues.[highlighted portion end] These clinical evaluations were observed regardless of whether the therapist was personally acquainted with bisexual people or had any experience with bisexual clients. Instead, stereotypical clinical issues were perceived as particularly salient among psychotherapists who viewed the hypothetical bisexual clients as immature and confused. These results suggest that like the general public, psychotherapists adhere to stereotypical beliefs about bisexual people. Such biases are likely to have negative impacts on bisexual clients’ diagnoses and overall satisfaction from therapy. We conclude that education may be key to curbing anti-bisexual bias among psychotherapists and ensuring better therapeutic outcomes for bisexual clients.

We always talk about how "in the old days, homosexuality was considered a mental illness. That was such a victory!" But we never talk about the fact that if you're bisexual, to this very present day, most mental health professionals will take that as a sign that you have a personality disorder. A🧵
SCREENGRAB of a part of the Abstract of the study cited bellow:
Abstract
Psychologists nowadays tend to view same-sex attraction as a normal part of human sexuality, but it is less clear whether they still hold prejudicial views regarding bisexuality. [start of highlighted part] Previous studies have demonstrated that psychotherapists’ clinical evaluation is affected by whether their client is bisexual. One plausible interpretation is that such differences stem from an uncritical adoption of bisexual stereotypes, namely, that bisexual people are confused, immature, and unable to maintain romantic relationships. [end of highlight]

Individual lesbians, such as myself, may have changed their minds about bisexual women, but it remains generally true that the loyalties of bisexual women are regarded by most lesbian feminists as deeply suspect.
The irony of this position is that bisexual women have been present in lesbian spaces and worked alongside lesbians for lesbian rights throughout the history of the lesbian feminist movement. What

Bisexual Women and the "Threat" to Lesbian Space: Or What If All the Lesbians Leave? by Sharon Dale Stone paper up on gdrive ⬇️
Bisexual Women and the
"Threat" to Lesbian Space:
Or What If All the Lesbians Leave?

Coming out as a lesbian in the 1970s, I entered a world of abso-lutes. I learned to invert the values of dominant society so that lesbians were valorized and heterosexuals were denigrated, and by extrapolation, lesbians were trustworthy and heterosexuals were not.
Through my association with lesbian feminists, I learned to regard bisexual women not as kinky and tainted with lesbianism but as "fence sitters," dangerously untrustworthy because of their associations with men. In the 1970s, those who joined the lesbian feminist movement to further the cause of lesbian liberation were expected to learn these basic lessons.
Now, in the 1990s, I continue to name myself lesbian, and I remain committed to the cause of lesbian liberation, but I am no longer willing to uncritically accept that the world can be understood in terms of absolutes. This extends to my understanding of sexuality, which I do not believe can be dichotomized as either heterosexual or homosexual.
I have also given up the simplistic belief that it is possible to judge a woman's trustworthiness on the basis of her sexual identity. It is wrong, I am persuaded, to categorically dismiss bisexual women as inherently untrustworthy — a threat to lesbian space.

Plural Desires: Writing Bisexual Women’s Realities by Bisexual Anthology Collective a book compiling a collection of essays by canadian bisexual women.
PLURAL DESIRES: Writing Bisexual Women’s Realities

EDITED BY
The Bisexual Anthology Collective:
Leela Acharya, Nancy Chater,
Dionne Falconer, Sharon Lewis,
Leanna McLennan & Susan NosovWe began Plural Desires: Writing Bisexual Women's Realities four years ago with a dream & a sense of something missing. What was missing were the voices & images of bisexual women, particularly in a Canadian context, reflecting on the pleasures, pains, challenges & strengths of being bisexual. Whether we look to the homophobic & heterosexist dominant society that views bisexual women as kinky, exotic, hypersexual, something to entertain men, perverted non-heterosexuals or lesbians; or whether we look to often biphobic lesbian cultures where bisexual women tend to be seen as confused, fence-sitting, male-identified dabblers with heterosexual privilege who make unreliable sexual, political or life partners, images by & about bisexual women that affirm our existence, our validity & our complexity are in short supply.
& in both the heterosexual & lesbian/gay worlds, an "either/or" view of sexuality prevails which renders identifying as bisexual apparently impossible.
