I'm waaay behind on my podcasts so I'm just getting to this, but this interview with C. Thi Nguyen is incredible, and very eloquently explains a link I noticed between metrics, games and gamification, but couldn't articulate nearly as well. Everyone with an interest in systems design should listen.

One thing that I feel doesn't get discussed enough: there are as many ways to make TTRPGs as there are ways to play and enjoy them. Whenever someone tries to tell you the "one true way" to build a TTRPG, please ignore them... they are wrong.

We had a handful of books, a table full of mates, and enough confidence to get half t' rules wrong all evenin'. Somehow we still managed to have a grand time. There's nowt wrong with askin' for help, but roleplayin' games have always rewarded folk who are willin' to muddle through together.

I see ads for D&D/DM "coaching", is that something people actually sign up for? I feel like there's so much free material out there, and most new DMs are high school/college age or otherwise don't have the cash on hand, but maybe there's a market of people who best learn person-to-person?

Ok, forking response in a different direction for a different, if equally hand-waving point. Subverting the baseline is entirely valid as an approach, but not if you stop with the cool idea and just expect the GM to make it interesting for you. That’s crap.

I’ll also add this: editing a TTRPG is not just a spelling & grammar pass. These are complex technical documents. Running them through a spellchecker isn’t going to cut it because it can’t spot rules or plot inconsistencies. TTRPG editors need to understand the rule system to do their job well.

LLMs impress the writers who do not want to write, the coders who don't want to code, the researchers who don't want to research, and the lawyers that don't want to actually understand case law. Those that desperately tell you how powerful Al is and that you simply must use it are looking for you to validate their own laziness or distaste for effort, and those who are impressed with LLMs' outputs tend to be people with low standards.

Ok, venting about a map that annoyed me lead to a fairly involved internal argument about the actual purpose of maps in an RPG. It was an argument because I *thought* I had a pretty good answer, but apparently that answer had some holes in it. So, let's talk maps.

I can't help but think about how "community" is a vague word. Words have use, not meaning, and people will use the word to mean any number of things, which leads to confusion and conflict. Much of the discourse I'm seeing is as much or more about semantics than ideas.

A great and terrible place to scavenge in the deathlands -- the wreck of a leviathan hunter. (This is the main adventure site in Requiem for the Wretched Dead.)
A black and white illustration depicting a massive metal ship, wrecked on a rocky coast. A pair of deathland scavengers approach it with caution, placing electroplasmic flares to guide their way and (hopefully) deter any vile spirits or terrors in the vicinty.

RPGs have an odd mixture of luck and skill which I've seen frustrate players. The most common example of this is player intelligence vs character intelligence, but it can also manifest in some players feeling like they made a bad decision if a roll goes badly.
