#birdoftheDay #paridae Here is a tufted titmouse from April in NYC's Central Park. 🪶📸
A small, round bird stands in profile on a gray rock. S/he looks at the viewer with her round black left eye. Her chest and abdomen are white with a hint of orange on the flanks. Her eye is surrounded by white but the head is mostly gray. Her feathers peak in a crest on the head. Her beak is stubby and black. Her back, wings and tail are dark gray. The background is a mix of blurry tans and greens from the surrounding forest.

Rob, covering for Alan, says: For #BirdOfTheDay, the main Theme is #JKLM bird species starting with these letters. The Alt Theme is #Grey, birds with Grey in its Plumage. (of course, "gray" is misspelled. 😊) Here is a Muscovy duck from a local park, Oct 4, 2026. 🪶📸
Seen from behind, this is a head and shoulders image of a Muscovy duck. He has a black body with a white head and neck. His face has the red, bumpy growth (caruncle) surrounding his eye down to his bill. The background is green algae-covered pond water.

Yes! This... Even before I became a bird-nerd, I remember watching a documentary about a parrot population in San Francisco. "The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill," 2003

We also had a parrot join our group once and the call was definitely different from the rest! I read somewhere that the parakeets are such a jovial group, that why wouldn’t a parrot want to join?! 😆

Goodnight Bluesky Folks! A few days ago I shared a photo of a great crested grebe with a small fish in its beak. Here’s the portrait of that grebe, taken with my Canon EOS R50! #Birds🪶 #NaturePhotography #PhotographersOfBlueSky #NatureLover #UKBirding #WildlifePhotograph #CanonR50
This close-up photo features a great crested grebe facing forward in water, holding a small fish in its bill.
Key Details:
The Bird: The grebe has a distinctive dark, tufted crest on top of its head, striking reddish eyes, white plumage along its cheeks and front neck, and dark striping on its sides. Its sharp, long beak firmly clasps the prey.
The Prey: A small, silvery fish is caught horizontally between the upper and lower mandibles of the bird's beak.
Background & Lighting: The background consists of dark blue, rippling water. Bright light hits the bird, emphasizing the texture of its wet feathers and water droplets on its head.

Today's ALT theme of #UrbanBirds is perfect for this adaptable group of Mitred Parakeets. These birds--originally from South America, have established a number of feral colonies in the U.S.. One group lives near me. Every night at happy hour they all start callling up a storm! #birdoftheday 🪶📸

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #ShoreBirds. I had never even heard of a Surfbird until I saw one in #SonomaCounty #California. Winter range is among the longest and narrowest of any No. American bird, Alaska to Chile. But winter range extends inland only a few yards above the tide line." 🪶
A chunky grey shorebird on a rock next to the Pacific. It has a short chunky blunt bill and lovely speckles on its tummy.

Here's a break from all the birds... this is a Mexican Cactus Fly seen on my walk today. I've never noticed one before. #insects 📸
A mostly black fly with large purplish eyes sits on a flower head nectaring. We see mostly translucent wings hanging down with just a bit of amber on the edges. There are two white spots on her thorax but otherwise she's black, including legs and antennae. Small yellow and white flowers on green stems fill the frame otherwise.

With today's theme of #LookingDown, three recent shots came to mind immediately. The winner has to be the red-breasted nuthatch as they love to look down so much. 😉😁 ⬇️ #birdOfTheDay #birds #nature #Photography #WardlowPark #LongBeachCA
A bird clings to the underside of a large horizontal pine tree branch. There is a window between all the pond fronds through which we get a clear view of a bird looking straight down with his neck bent way back in order to do so. He has a black cap and a black eye-stripe on an otherwise white face. He has slate gray back and wings, and a cinammon colored chest and abdomen. The background is blurry, dark green fronds.
