You know that thing where you have an appointment at 4pm so you spend 9 hours doing absolutely nothing haha yeah I'm doing that but for all of October

To illustrate how absolutely bananas it is to dump 50k lines of code on someone and expect them to review/integrate it: The entirety of BioMenace Remastered - engine, gameplay code, UI, level editor etc. - is currently 72k lines after more than 2 years of development. So basically (cont.)

FINALLY FINISHED!! Behold, my entry for this year's @desertbus.org : A Hollow Knight/Silksong bug mask display! The masks are made of porcelain, with some thread for Lace. I stained, varnished, and lined the wooden display cabinet myself. The masks are attached by magnets. I hope folks like it!

Interesting service for Japanese learners I want to share! ohanasikagawa.com A ~weekly free event, where Japanese and English learners can have two 1-1 sessions (15 min per language each) + free sessions befere and after. I think it's well organized and a great opportunity to speak to various people

2am earthquake here in Melbourne. Might be the strongest one I've felt here. A little spooky, as befitting of the season.

New DJ OKAWARI album landed today It's not as evocative as his earlier work but it's a much more refined sound and has a really comfy atmosphere to it.

I didn't know this usage existed until you mentioned it. I haven't heard it before but a quick search shows some products being sold locally (Australia) with this description. So I suppose the answer is yes. E.g:

Find Feast Watson 250ml Satin Black Japan Stain And Varnish at Bunnings. Visit your local store for the widest range of products.

On themes: It may put off some people but there's little joy in these stories. Most of them have a bleak atmosphere. There is one heartwarming story about motherhood; the rest all cover love, death, suicide, dysfunctional families, trauma, despair, or just "weird" (not in that order).

_myooooon @birdbrain.dev · 21/09/2026

One story in particular (馬小屋の乙女) stands well above the others in terms of difficulty. It's written with looooong convoluted sentences where it's hard to recall all the parts by the end of the sentence. I read this alongside the English. Unfortunately the payoff was negative as the ending sucked.

120

_myooooon @birdbrain.dev · 21/09/2026

On difficulty: I'd say it's upper-intermediate. If you're already reading Japanese but need a little push to transition to novels, this is a good resource. Expect to be challenged. I was definitely not ready for this on my first read-through which resulted in a lot more frustration than needed

130

_myooooon @birdbrain.dev · 21/09/2026

Reading it now with a new perspective and far fewer lookups I found it very enjoyable. There are 8 stories. The first is 2 pages, the last is 27 (sparse) pages, and the rest are 12-14 pages. The writing styles differ dramatically as they are from different authors.

_myooooon @birdbrain.dev · 21/09/2026

Now that I've read the book again, I have some ~updated opinions~. In my original post I said it was a dry read but that is false! Either I was too young to really appreciate the themes covered (I read it 10 years ago), or too frustrated trying to understand it, or a combination of the two.

It is called 鼹鼠 (うごろもち) by Hiromi Kawakami. It's a short (12 page) story that appears in the linked book which I'm reading now. It is an incredibly bizarre story but in a good way. I really enjoyed it.
