Bowser's pet
It's a chain chomp toy I got from a gachapon machine around 2023.
With a doll arm in its teeth. The arm belongs to Flandre Scarlet. It's okay, she has another, better, arm. The chain chomp has a chain tied to its back and then looped onto a post. The post is a bamboo stick I cut short and planted into the ground. The chain is a gold necklace I had lying around. It was the right size of chain. I tried to make it grey in editing but then decided I didn't care anymore.

At least I can get up to this part. Might take a while yet. For some reason this has been my least successful extra stage so far, even though I have no issue in practice mode. I blame RNG

There was a two year gap between reading the first half and the second half. It gets quite difficult, and I was driven mad by how hard it was to line up the two sides. I even started numbering paragraphs to try to follow along. The editor wasn't pretending it was ever going to be otherwise.

My long-form Japanese reading journey started with this book. I've been meaning to toss it out, but not before reading it again, so I'm going to do that this week. It's a really, really dry read though. I've filled it with (now) embarrassing annotations all over. It's nice to see progress like this

I've done nothing but play Silksong these past few weeks. The game was excellent. I had a few gripes but the sheer quantity of high quality boss fights more than makes up for it. I really liked the writing, too. I don't much care for the plot but the character dialogue is top-notch.

From other VNs I know my reading speed is around 3x native level but for this series: Episode 1: 7.3x Episode 2: 6.5x Episode 3: 7.1x Hard hard hard Very challenging read. Episode 3 at least lived up to the "economic thriller" tag which made it somewhat good. The first two were a joke.

If you are bluesky years old you will be familiar with a series called 藍より青し. It turns out there's a longer expression where this originates from. 青は藍より出でて藍より青し blue dye comes from the indigo plant and is bluer than indigo In the same vein, it's used to allude to a student surpassing their teacher

泥縄式 - doing at the last moment While a mud rope ceremony sounds like a good time for all, this is just doing something in the style (式) of 泥縄, which is an abbreviated form of 泥棒を捕らえて縄を綯う - to start to do something after its result was needed (i.e., too late).

10 million moonbux if you can write this kanji with correct stroke order on the first try. Spoiler: you can't. Spoiler 2: moonbux aren't real. 蠅 is the original form of 蝿. I've seen plenty of 蝿 but this is my first 蠅. I could not guess it correctly even though it looks kinda obvious now 😔

This one is just bizarre. I didn't grab the context but these images are from the glossary. Here the author uses the word "undertaker". However, the first sentence of the definition is describing an "underwriter". The rest of the definition appears to be completely made up bullshit?

The 泡 is a stand-in for 慌てる. Both sources claim they share the same origin but this second one is a bit dubious on how 泡 was chosen. Nevertheless, you can read 泡を食う as 慌てるを食う or "to incur a flustering". BTW, both of these sources (in ALT) look like really good resources to keep bookmarked.

There are a lot of __を食う expressions with this meaning to be found in the dictionary. We have this same usage of "eat" in English. (And so does (my dialect of) Arabic for that matter). In the source below they use 肘鉄を食う as a great example because in English you can say "ate an elbow (to the face)"

I spent too much time on this one lol. 泡を食う - to (suddenly) become confused/flustered, usually followed by fleeing. I thought it was funny that the words "eat a bubble" have an equivalent English expression "lose one's head". There are two parts to this: 食う here means something akin to "incur"

三つ巴 [みつどもえ] A design featuring a 3-comma shape. I'm certain I've seen all sorts of 巴 designs over the years but I'm only now learning about them. Wikipedia has good info. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomoe It can also be used to refer to a three-way (or four-way, etc) fight, as it is used here.

ザル審査 has the opposite meaning to what I would have initially guessed. A sieve is for sifting and sifting things in English typically means precision, like sifting through data. But here it's considered imprecise because the holes, presumably, are too big and let anything through.

I found variations of this on kotobank (傷持つ足, 脛疵) but this one for 脛に傷持てば笹原走る from the ことわざを知る辞典 offers up some good interpretations. Translation in the alt text. (Also all sources in the thread have links in alt text).
Two interpretations are offered:

1. If you have open wounds on your shins, walking through bamboo grass would be far too painful as the grasses prick those wounds. So instead of calmly walking though, you end up running to quickly get to the other side. This is a metaphor for people with a dark past who cannot quietly and calmly traverse public society.

2. Those who have a guilty conscience are startled by the faintest sound. Even the rustling of bamboo grass would compel them to flee on foot at a brisk pace.

The text doesn't state it but for #2 I think the implication is that running through the bamboo grass is what causes the wounds on the shins.
