Got the Covid and Flu vaccines yesterday. An undesirable side effect was a fever of 102F! I blame Lyme disease for my body’s inability to act right. Throughout this I have learned something irritating: I find hot flashes more unbearable than a 102 fever. That makes me angry for women’s healthcare.

Getting two “500-year” precipitation events in ~month has been an unwelcome way to teach students about the fact that we use a weird system to describe event probability.

Look at this xenophobic bullshit from a research training I had to do. Unsure why they think this an international collaborator issue only, especially given that in my experience the biggest pains in the ass have been domestic… Super gross.

It has been a while, but I have a summary of all the activity at Anak Krakatau over the last few days. Long and short: big explosive eruption, but not out of character for the volcano (or Indonesian volcanoes for that matter). It is a hot air travel mess, though: eruptions.site/2026/09/07/s...

Finally got power, and it’s possible I’m the only person whose day got substantially worse because of it. I am currently sucking mystery slime out from my fridge's drip tray (it is stupidly fixed beneath the air compressor) with a used syringe I got from my neighbour who works with animals.

Still no power/water/internet/cell service. Rain leaked through the windows last week when we got 3 feet of rain. Probably gonna happen again when we get another foot. Classes start back up on Monday. Send a meteorite.

I put on my petty glasses and pointed out all of the issues and inconsistencies in their damage report, requested the video footage I know LAX takes when you enter the rental center, and mentioned I spoke with a lawyer. They quickly dropped the claim. Don’t rent from budget/avis is the lesson here.

Avis/budget sent me a $1100 bill for damage to a rental car. Anyone know what those window makings mean? The damage estimate is dated 45 hours after I dropped it of plus 4 extra miles... I always get video of the car when I pick it up, but forgot to do the same when dropping it off.

If you’re running a program that requires an in depth application for undergrads, I’m begging you to provide feedback to those who weren’t selected. These folks need feedback to learn how to improve subsequent applications. It’s more work, but it’s important work we should be doing for the next gen.

The tech industry is gutting our public science infrastructure and hijacking the NSF to be their own R&D department. Not paying taxes is apparently not enough; they need both hands in our pockets. (There’s nothing wrong with funding those fields; it’s funding them only at the expense of others).

My union rep legitimately suggested “training” AI to learn our writing styles to help craft our tenure dossiers. Absolutely the fuck not. Me: AI is a bullshit slip machine that doesn’t work like that. I would fail my students if they did that. Him: it’s inevitable + we should be early adopters.
Screen shot 3 panel from the tv show hacks.

Panel 1: ai is here, and it’s here to stay

Panel 2: see, that is a big part of why I hate it. This forced inevitability.

Panel 3: you could easily stop it if people could say they didn’t want it, but you don’t want to give people a choice.
