We at Skype a Scientist are deeply troubled by the closure of the Academy of Natural Sciences. We urge you to contact Drexel University Leadership and Academy interim leader Trish Wellenbach to urge them to reopen the museum. President Merlo president@Drexel.edu Trish Wellenbach tw958@drexel.edu
a block of text with a statement that reads We at Skype a Scientist are deeply alarmed by the decision of Drexel University leadership and the Academy of Natural Sciences Board to close the Academy’s public museum.

Skype a Scientist is based in Philadelphia with deep roots in our city. Making science accessible, in particular for Philly’s children, is a top priority for our organization. We operate in community centers, at street festivals, and at the intersection of science and art. For the last 10 years, we have worked to engage a broader coalition of Philly residents to care for our local biodiversity.

Our program does not exist in a vacuum. The work that we do, alongside environmental education centers, our museums, classroom teachers, and more, create an ecosystem of connections with science. The loss of any part of this fragile ecosystem is detrimental. The Academy of Natural Sciences grounds biodiversity education in Philadelphia. With grand fossil halls, historical connections, and engaging exhibits, it is a place where many Philadelphians develop a love of science. Loss of access to this space cannot be tolerated.

We are living through an erosion of public education, particularly in the life sciences. Philadelphia cannot afford to lose our flagship biodiversity museum.

We call on the leaders of Drexel University and the Academy board to reverse their decision to close the Academy’s public museum. The children of Philadelphia and future generations of Philly-made scientists are counting on you.

Females and immature males are duller, sometimes mostly grayish with just faint yellow on the face and undertail coverts. Always note two white wingbars and pale bill. Breeds mainly in coniferous or mixed forests at middle or high elevations. Winters as far south as Central America, where it can be found in any forested habitat. Often stays high in the canopy. The Franciscan monastery of Our Lady of the Cave on the island of Lopud, Croatia, was founded in 1483 and transformed into a private retreat known as Lopud 1483. Built in 1483 in the Elafiti Islands near Dubrovnik, the dilapidated structure was restored by Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza to serve as an art space and hotel. The original 13 monks' cells were converted into five suites; while the main complex is now an exclusive private property, the adjoining church occasionally opens to the public.

Vote #Orpiment for its role in global art history! #MinCup26 #arthist Consider this personification of wisdom from Kashmir or western Tibet:
Fragmentary Leaf from an Ashtasahasrika Prajnaparamita Sutra
Artist: Unidentified Artist, Kashmiri
Date: 12th century
Culture: Kashmir or western Tibet
Medium: Gold, lapis lazuli, cinnabar, indigo, and orpiment pigments and black ink on paper
Dimensions: Image: 8 1/16 × 6 1/2 in. (20.5 × 16.5 cm)
Classification: Paintings
Credit Line: Gift of Chino Franco Roncoroni, in celebration of the Museum’s 150th Anniversary, 2020
Object Number: 2020.74.2
Curatorial Department: Asian Art, The Met

"This painting depicts the personification of the wisdom text Prajnaparamita. She is represented in six-armed form, the central hands are held over the heart in a variation of the dharmacakramudra, whilst her upper hands display the sacred book (pustaka) and the thunderbolt scepter (vajra), whilst her lower hands hold a rosary (mala) and gesture boon granting. She wears golden jewelry on her body and a tripartite diadem adorns herhead, which is framed by a red halo. A girdle, seemingly of strings of pearls, secures her waistcloth, beautifully decorated with large red rosettes in blue hexagonal frames. Slender ribbons fly through the air, one supporting a blue lotus bloom and stem. She is seated in a mediation posture, enthroned on a golden lotus and she is encircled in a rainbow colored nimbus. Particularly noteworthy is the tonal modelling of the bodily forms, heightened with finely controlled orange-red lines. The swelling breasts and constricted waist are hallmarks of the Kashmir style."
