Jack here! I recently met with Kateryna Zhalnina of #BioEGSB to get an overview of a new EcoPOD-centered project and how they're being used reduce ♻️ nitrogen pollution. EcoPODs are fabricated ecosystems designed for large plants, allowing researchers to better mimic how plants exist in the field 🌾.

Jack here! I recently went to see the Multimodal Optical Scope with Adaptive Imaging Correction (MOSAIC) instrument in person. MOSAIC is a powerful new microscope 🔬 that combines 10+ imaging techniques into a single machine, allowing users to swiftly switch between modes without disrupting a sample.

Jack here! I visited #BioMBIB researcher Aris Polyzos to learn about his team's latest work, which identified an overlooked aspect of Huntington's disease. They were able to draw a link to Huntington's neurodegeneration by looking at DNA breakage; they were then able to reverse it in mice.

Researchers at Berkeley Lab and collaborating institutions developed a reconfigurable microscope that consolidates more than ten imaging techniques into one instrument. It processes its massive datasets using nersc.bsky.social + computational tools developed by #BioMBIB's Gokul Upadhyayula.

Jack Here! I met with #BioEGSB researcher Laura Cook to learn about her team's work to uncover the underlying mechanisms behind how faces 🐔 🐭 are structured. Laura's team is focused on studying enhancers—regions of genetic information that control when, where, and how much of a gene is expressed.🧬

Berkeley Lab #BioMBIB researchers in collab with @hsph.harvard.edu colleagues revealed an overlooked characteristic of Huntington's disease and demonstrated in mice that treatment with an antioxidant suppressed the neurodegenerative damage and symptoms of the disease. Jack here! To learn how researchers are upcycling ♻️ the industrial paper byproduct lignin, I visited Ning Sun at the Advanced BioProcess Development Unit (ABPDU). Lignin is a major waste 🔥 product from paper; Ning's team developed a method to convert it into useful chemicals (benzylamines). ✨

When people ingest shellfish harvested from waters affected by a red tide, the harmful saxitoxin can lead to paralytic shellfish poisoning. No antidote exists, but researchers recently confirmed a naturally occurring protein in frogs can reverse the lethal effects of red tide toxin in mice. Link 👇.

Jack here! I toured the SIBYLS Beamline at the @als.lbl.gov with #BioMBIB researcher Scott Classen. Scott is working on  BilboMD, a computational platform for predicting protein structures based off real world X-ray data. The website is free, making it super easy for other researchers to use.✨

Hi, Jack here! I recently met #BioEGSB’s Peter Andeer for a tour of the EcoBOT self-driving lab. The latest in a line of evolving plant–microbe 🌱🦠 research tech developed at Berkeley Lab, EcoBOT autonomously manages small ecosystems, EcoFABs, that control growth conditions to the microbial level 🧫.

A recent article about fungal dye production included work by @jbei.lbl.gov & #BioBSE scientist Aindrila Mukhopadhyay. Making synthetic indigo is a toxic process. Aindrila’s team engineered genes into the fungus Rhodosporidium Toruloides to naturally produce the similar indigoidine dye. Read more 👇.

Hi all, Jack here! I recently toured Theia, the powerful custom cryo-EM project led by #BioMBIB scientist Holger Müller. Typical cryo-EMs sacrifice resolution for contrast; Theia uses a laser phase plate to increase contrast while maintaining a higher resolution thanks to its custom configuration.

Researchers identified a compound that selectively disrupts a hard-to-target tumor growth pathway and used beamline 5.0.2 at the Advanced Light Source to characterize the chemical interactions critical to its potency. Read more: als.lbl.gov/disrupting-cancers-brok…
