Great point! I don’t love talking to someone doing their business so this makes sense. I am definitely referring to the impatient attempts to open the door, although a gentle turn of the handle would probably still have me clutching my pearls from inside the bathroom.

Yesterday I was sitting waiting for an (occupied) bathroom and a man walked past me, stood contemplatively in front of the shut door for a few seconds, then threw himself into the handle trying to open it. He didn’t knock. Are y’all…just not processing? Do you want the thrill?

It’s been strange to be so unproductive, but two layoffs in a year, plus this stupid diagnosis, have really wrecked momentum and morale. I have a paper on my desk I need to submit, so I’m still doing snow leopard work, but even big cats can’t conquer breast cancer.

Recently I *finally* felt the itch to do something with my science brain again. I was interviewing someone for a research award they received, and they asked if I’d considered applying for a Fulbright postdoc. I was surprised because those are competitive…I lowkey forgot I’m good at science.

I *do* have some things in the works I’m very excited about. It’s science communication, again, which feels like a return to self. But gosh, it’s been a slog. This past year has been a vacillation between “who am I now?” and “I really don’t care.” I’m grateful to be here, but here has been tough!

I realize that’s very Dear Diary of me, but as I was also laid off from my fed research contract during treatment, I haven’t had anything exciting to share. And, to be honest, the space immediately after active treatment SUCKS. I’m also still in treatment.

I’ve been trying for months to come up with an update post-cancer, but words and attention fall short. Mostly, I don’t think folks have space for a stranger’s chronic illness. Add to it that this platform, like all social media, demands output, and… I’m afraid I’ve become a has-been.

We have “good” health insurance, too, because my husband is a federal employee. We pay for the most expensive plan and have a moderate out of pocket max. We worked hard to build savings after I took one million years to get a PhD. I was laid off during treatment. Seeing the numbers really sucks.

We filed our taxes last night and spent a lot of time tallying my medical expenses from last year. The number is…horrific. I really wish I’d done a gofundme because we spent most of our savings on medical bills. I just turned 39 and worked so hard to build up my life. Financially, its gone.

Life update! I’m alive. Been a long recovery from last year, I just turned 39, I’m still looking for a job in my field, my 18 year old cat has stage 4 kidney disease, I was recently on Ologies, things are mixed but looking up.

Wow, it’s been a really long year. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in February. I completed 5 rounds of egg retrieval, had my tumor removed, was laid off from my federal research contract, had 5 weeks of radiation, got shingles 2x, started 5 years of endocrine therapy, and am now in remission.

It’s been a terribly difficult time for me, and I’m quite scared- and sad- to go thru this, I’m thankful for the community who rallied around me as soon as I got the diagnosis. I’ve felt every emotion. This is extremely unfair, but biology never is.

I found the lump over Christmas, two weeks after my miscarriage. I had scans and a biopsy. In the 3 weeks since being diagnosed, I’ve had close to 2 dozen appointments for surgery, fertility, reconstruction, and genetic testing. I don’t have all the answers yet, but we think I caught it early.
