Yeah, I agree that it's brain work. And I have never watched this many movies at the festival before. But I had years where I watched many movies without taking the week off work even, and I was fine. Don't know, was weird. I was of course wide awake after the last movie of the festival. 😂

010

Also double funny because on my other side @jardinjaponais.bsky.social was joking that this was all factually correct except horses can't run that long. Only the horses thing, though. Everything else is fine. 😂

030

But they had festival passes, they had over 30 movies this week to learn how they work. Every day I am amazed at the sparkling, wide spectrum of the human experience.

It was the amount of time the characters had to speak to each other until the alien monster caught up to them. The monster would have caught up before they had finished speaking. ... I would say maybe they had never seen a movie before, they simply don't know how they work.

Oh also happy to report that one of the people who found the trained assassins killing each other movie unrealistic was sitting next to me again and they also thought the alien monster action movie was unrealistic! And this time I managed to partially overhear what bothered their realism senses!

But every minute it kept going after that the plot became dumber and worse. I was so fucking annoyed by the end, I refused to clap. 😂 Which is a shame, because as I said, it started off *so strong.*

#FFF movie 15: Hope. I stand by it, if your movie is 3 hours long, you suck at your job. And this movie is my new go-to example. If this movie had simply stopped after 90 minutes, it would have been a fucking riot and a half, highest marks.

Also I'm cool with non-linear storytelling but if you don't make clear what is past, present or future, it's confusing and I don't enjoy it. But my God did it look beautiful.

A little girl has to die or 1,000 years of suffering to save her soul? I'm thinking sorry girl, you're toast. A movie where everything only happens to save her soul doesn't work for me, because the entire time I will be sitting there thinking well, none of that was necessary in the first place.

#FFF movie 14: Another World. My regularly necessary reminder that animated movie doesn't mean kids movie, boy howdy was this not a kids movie. It looked fucking phenomenal and I'm glad to have seen it but I wasn't the intended audience.

Today is the last day of the festival and we're gonna see two movies, our last two movies. While I enjoyed the festival I'm also kinda glad when it's over, I really don't know why I found the whole thing so exhausting, but boy I am exhausted.

But it really wasn't all that scary, I'm not even joking when I say this movie had more dance numbers than jump scares. Had a fun time with this one.

If your characters are imprisoned scammers and thieves and your target is a corrupt government, you can punch up *so far* with your jokes, it's awesome. @jardinjaponais.bsky.social skipped this one because gore, and good call probably, very gory.

#FFF movie 13: Ghost in the Cell. I was worried about the amount of gay prison rape jokes I would have to endure but they did 1-2 at the start to get it off their chests and then we moved on with the good stuff. This movie was so much funnier than I expected.

ANYWAY, back to this one: he's good at directing and the movie is quirky and hilarious and so creative and I'm very glad they're letting this guy make movies. I hope he makes many more!

...Maybe it's fine I didn't nominate River, actually. 😂 (River is still an amazing movie based on the strength of the script and the performances, whoever shot it simply didn't know about white balancing and the movie takes place in the snow.)

#FFF movie 12: You Are the Film. Aaaaaah! It made me sad that I hadn't nominated River for festivids lol. This movie is written by the same guy who wrote River, but this time he's also directing and I'm glad he did, because whoever directed River was not good at their job.

#FFF movie 11: Beasts of the Southern Wild. I first saw that movie at FFF, apparently 14 years ago. 👵🏻 Was neat I got to revisit it in the same context (well, the festival moved to a different theater, but close enough). Still a remarkable, special movie.

#FFF movie 10 was The Chaser. Absolutely riveting, not a dull moment. I loved it, but here's your word of warning that it is grimdark in that Korean movie sort of way, iykyk. (Sidenote: Fascinating how there are only shit trailers for this movie. Well I guess it is just very of its time.)

#FFF movie 9 was The Fox. Absolutely recommended if you get the chance, it was *so* funny.

We had no movies on Sunday. When the program came out I was sad about that, by the time Sunday rolled around I was relieved. Why is this so exhausting? 😂

Time to turn one big list into two small lists, hell yeah!

#FFF movie 8 was A Chinese Ghost Story, the movie I was looking forward to the most out of the entire line-up, never mind that it's ~40 years old. 😅 I was so hype that my first viewing would be on the big screen. Oh Leslie Cheung. ❤️💔 Absolutely loved it.

Yesterday we saw #FFF movie 7, AnyMart. The trailer is unsubbed but I think you get the idea even if you don't understand Japanese. I liked it. Well acted, funny and surprising, as in "hahah–OH SHIT." Also nice build; slow-burn escalation. 😅

I didn't hear what part didn't fit their expectations. My meanest interpretation would be that they're fine with the body count but draw the line at Thai, Chinese, Japanese, English-speaking Korean ppl and a deaf guy all speaking their native language and still understanding each other.

Also, the worst part of FFF is having to hear the reviews from others around you. For this one I heard two separate people say it was unrealistic... You just watched a movie where trained assassins killed five million people. So other way around, which part of that did you think was *realistic*?

250

I expected that to be a dumb action movie but it actually had more plot (not enough to fill the time, sadly) and an interesting structure, but that all made it harder to stay awake. 😅 Also my description doesn't make it sound that way, but the characters are very likeable.

Tristes Tropiques is a 2025 Korean Movie South Korea Native title: 슬픈 열대. A group of young assassins, trained by the rainforest's absolute ruler known as

It also apparently doesn't have a trailer. 😂 I've linked the sparse MDL page. Anyway, it's a Korean movie about a mercenary who picks up 14 unwanted kids and trains them to be his successor. And then as adults they all fight each other after his death to be the new boss.

#FFF movie 6: Tristes Tropique. Did you know watching movies in cinema all day is exhausting? And that at the end of the day the air in that cinema is really warm and stale? Straight up nodded off 2-3 times during this one. That movie really had to work double time to hold my attention. 😅

Side note: I was envious of all the kids' outfits, they were amazing.

#FFF movie 5: Buddy. Another one where I had low expectations based on the premise. It all sounded very "haha look at us, we're so edgy." And it did end up having some of that. But for the most part it made other, better, choices and kept positively surprising me!

#FFF movie 4: The Restoration at Grayson Manor. Based on the trailer I expected not good but campy fun. And it *was* campy fun plus better than expected. It wasn't the greatest but mostly it didn't seem to aim for that anyway, it didn't take itself very serious.

A perfect card! Happy birthday! 🎉🎈

FFF apparently had the Germany premiere for the movie. But maybe there will be a few more showings now.

100

You still can, it's not like it's some small time indie movie. I'm sure it will be streaming somewhere soon. Or do you mean you specifically wanted to see it at FFF?

100

#FFF movie 3 was Blades of the Guardians, that movie started at 10 pm and went on for two hours, the things I sign up for. 👵🏻 Anyway, ended the day with some nice wuxia, got to set my brain to off and watch cool fight scenes for a bit.

#FFF movie 2 was Carolina Caroline, which I was whatever about based on the trailer. But Samara Weaving is our grand patroness of FFF, she dragged us in. And I'm very glad she did. Wonderful movie about two really likable characters making some of the worst choices you've ever seen.

There were two movies on Wednesday that we skipped, so our opening movie was At the Place of Ghosts and hell yeah, we started well. Love a journey that's physical but also metaphysical. Wonderful filmography, too. Absolutely recommended. #FFF

Every year I get to watch so many cool movies I would never hear about otherwise, this festival is definitely a yearly highlight for me

010

Yeah, sadly I don't think my PS4 can do UHD, so I probably can't watch it. 😅

100

I will! And yeah, it's definitely a gamble how heavy on the horror movies the program will be each year.

010

I have hardly watched any new movies all year. But that's about to change, the 40th Fantasy Film Festival has started and in honor of that anniversary, @jardinjaponais.bsky.social and I got festival passes for the first time. We're gonna movies so hard! And you even get swag with your pass!
