The RNLI has said the abuse of volunteers in Portsmouth has forced it to close the lifeboat station there and stop operating since September 10. Nearby stations have been providing cover to the area instead. One of the UK's largest coastal cities without a lifeboat because of the far-right.

Somerset Council slams 'massively disappointing' delays to special needs reforms

The promised Schools White Paper won't now arrived until the spring of 2026 - leaving children and families "waiting ever longer" for…

Yes we have been working with the police on a response. This hotel is used by the Home Office for single women and families only, so it is so sad that they are targeting this specific location.

Unlike Reform UK councils, we won’t stop flying flags that show support and solidarity to everyone in our communities, because Somerset stands for unity, inclusion, and respect. 2/2

Absolutely disgraceful that the Home Office is now trying to send an Afghan woman, who helped western forces, back to the Taliban. Yvette Cooper should be putting a stop to this immediately.

We need high quality officers to deal with a council that has inherited a hugely difficult situation. Cheap and misleading attacks like this undermine the huge work councils are doing to care for our residents and build stronger communities.

Furthermore we have now completed a staffing restructure that has saved £34 million. Pay grades for all roles are in line with other councils and follow nationally agreed pay negotiations and job evaluations. 3/4

The map is really misleading as it compares tiny District Councils & big Unitary Councils. It ignores the remaining County Councils. It even admits this in the small print. Since 2023 Somerset Council has saved £4.1 million on senior salaries by reducing from 54 to 21 permanent senior staff today.

The Taxpayer’s Alliance has published this map claiming Somerset Council has 54 members of staff earning over £100,000 a year. This was the position two years ago on day 1 of Somerset Council, with all the staff from the Districts and County Council coming together into the Unitary Council. 1/4

The government delays on reforming social care are putting councils like Somerset at severe risk. We cannot sustain a council in an area of higher than average social care need with lower than average council tax. 1/2
